This is a very interesting book, it is a book subject and approach I have not seen before. Everybody always seems concerned with the "main event" in any piece of needlepoint. The main design or motif or whatever. So little thought is every given to backgrounds.
In fact, most of today's most admired and creative needlepoint designers ignore the whole subject of backgrounds. It is left up to the individual stitchers to chose a background and often the colors as well.
The book begins with a short primer on how to use it. Then there are 64 pages of
black and white background pattern graphs, ranging from 1 to 5 per page.
Then there are 5 pages of black and white pictures of a few of the patterns actually stitched. Followed by 4 pages of color photos of stitched backgrounds, 6 pictures to a page. The end is a chapter on color use in backgrounds.
I would call this a comprehensive book. it was published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Co in 1977.
This is a glossy cover paper bound book, it is in very good condition however there is some wear and scuffing on the edges of the paperbound book. The spine is tight. The pages are yellowed with age but otherwise the book is, indeed, very good.
The price for this book has gone way up, I am sorry to say, due to it's increasing rarity.
