Judith Baker Montano is a very well-known name in stitchery. Her books are always full of information & inspiration.
In fact, the subtitle for this book is:
An Illustrated Stitch Guide & Source Book of Inspiration.
To quote from the back cover (edited & paraphrased) "This elegant Stitch Guide includes all the step-by-step instructions & illustrations you'll need to create masterpieces. Elegant Stitches is imaginative & adventuresome stitching for all needle artists, from beginners to advanced."
"Learn how to fold, twist, know and manipulate thread, yarn & ribbon"
"Understand the basics of working with Silk Ribbon, Punch Needle, embroidery and choosing the proper materials"
With 117 illustrated stitches and 130 *crazy quilt* combination stitches. Includes full-color pages of new collages & landscapes.
Although this book is aimed at embroidery, all these great stitches and many of the ideas can be easily used for Needlepoint.
In paging through this book I am first impressed that it is a hard cover book with a spiral binding inside the covers. That way the book is protected but it will also lay flat for you to use. Best of Both Worlds, imo.
The book begins with 14 pages of Basics. Then the stitches. Each stitch is well described and the diagrams show clearly what the stitch is and how it is done. The diagrams are done in one color, which is a small disappointment.
There are full color pictures of many of the stitches used, call the pictures *in context*. They give you a good idea of uses and effect.
*Crazy Quilt* Stitches are slightly mis-named (again, in my own opinion). They are variations on stitches. There is a large section showing them with 26 pages of them, 3 to 5 to a page.
The next section is Free Form Embroidery. There are some excellent ideas here. You can freely substitute the word "embroidery" for the word "needlepoint".
This is a handsome book, just paging through it was a pleasure. I don't recommend this book to absolute beginners but anyone with some experience in stitchery will find this a good book to add to their collection.
Published by C & T Publishing in 1995. This is a hard cover book with an inside metal spiral binding a nice heavy paper pages. It has 176 pages, in total.
