Another terrific book from the Milner Craft Series of books from Australia. These are always wonderful books from Sally Milner Publishing.
The subtitle is : Designs and Projects.
To quote (and paraphrase) from the back cover
"Goldwork Embroidery by Mary Brown is the most comprehensive book on this ancient form of embroidery. The history of gold work in Britain and Europe is illuminated with images in glorious full color of gold embroidered costumes & textiles held in museum and private collections, many never previously published or seen by the public."
"This book incudes 15 original projects that either reference historical samples or exhibit contemporary techniques for this form of embroidery."
Mary Brown trained at the Royal School of Needlework in England . She now specializes in goldwork in her native Australia.
I have to agree, this is a gorgeous book. It begins with an overview of the history of Goldwork with lots of pictures from the 14th century to modern gold work decoration & designs.. It is full of pictures.
Then there is a chapter on the nature of Metal Threads.
The following chapters cover:
Materials, Equipment & Preparation Techniques
Goldwork Embroidery Techniques
Then the Projects. At the end of the book is a bibliography and list of suppliers.
This book is perhaps not suitable for someone just beginning needlepoint or embroidery but for someone with only minimal experience, this book will teach you Goldwork.
Many of the stitches & techniques here are easily adaptable to needlepoint and gold embellishment has become an important part of needlework.
This is a glossy cover paperbound book with heavy duty, glossy pages. Published in 2007 by Sally Milner Publishing. Goldwork Embroidery has 208 pages
