I am now able to list and sell the excellent books by Ann Strite-Kurz. For a long time they were difficult to find but now I am getting them, brand new, from Ann. I am very happy about this.
On the first page, Ann calls this book "ACollection Of Original Open Patterns For Canvas And Evenweave Fabrics".
There is only one other author who specializes in Open Patterns for Backgrounds (or indeed any stitching) but this book was the first for this idea having been published in 2003.
Quoting from Ann's web site: "This book was released in June 2003 and includes a variety of patterns with complete sequences as well as a medley of ideas for unusual background treatments. The text features interesting examples in finished pieces from over thirty outstanding designers and teachers as well as examples from Ann's work. These pieces are presented in black and white in the text, but a CD is included so that the designs can be either viewed or printed out in full color on a computer. The author has an established reputation for innovative stitch treatments, and many of the patterns presented are open arrangements with unconventional stitch sequences that conceal the traveling threads automatically."
Backgrounds includes a CD that will work on either PCs or MACs. Although there are no full color pictures in the text, they are all shown larger and in color on the CD.
The list of designers and needle artists who contributed to this book is awesome (and that is a word I rarely use). There are 39 named designers, most of them familar and well-known names (and then some).
The book begins with a section on General Guildlines for Planning Backgrounds. Chapter 1 covers: Mat Backgrounds, Backgrounds with Repeated Elements, Stripes As Effective Backgrounds, Couching Patterns As Backgrounds, Landscape Backgrounds, Shaded Backgrounds, Painted Backgrounds, Partial Backgrounds, Additional Counted Thread Backgrounds, Beaded Backgrounds, Traditional Blackwork Backgrounds, Micellaneous Canvas Backgrounds, Penny's Menagerie.
Chapter 2 is Planning and Execution Of Backgrounds with techniques for stitch refinement, planning tips, and glossary of unconventional terminology used by author.
Chapter 3: Simulated Darning Patterns As Backgrounds
Chapter 4: Backgrounds With Back-Stitched Outlines
Chapter 5: Texture Stitch Backgrounds
Chapter 6: Couching Patterns As Backgrounds
Chapter 7: Miscellaneous Backgrounds.
Very comprehensive and very impressive. The directions are complete and given in sequence, as needed. I found them easy to understand, which is really the most important thing, in the end.
Backgrounds is a self-published book, copywrited in 2003. It is a paperbound book with clear plastic covers and a plastic spiral binding. This is a brand new copy with 124 pages printed on both sides of the page and includes the CD.
