The subtitle of the new book from Carole Lake & Michael Boren is :
String Art For Needlepoint. Volume 1: Amadeus-Jessica.
They are, of course, the authors of the very popular book Painted Canvas Embellishment: An Idea Book & the Desert Island Stitches series (there is a new book in that series as well).
Quoting from the Introduction:
This is not a rulebook, rather, it is a guidebook to these fascinating stitches. The stitching techniques laid out in this book reflect the way we work these stitches and teach them."
"We love these curvy stitches and the way they are constructed. We have used, and continue to use, all of these stitches in our designs. In fact, we loved so many of them that we had to divide our collection into 2 books.".
"These stitches are often referred to as *Hilton Stitches* referring to the talented designer and teacher, Jean Hilton."
"What is curve stitching? The technique, invented in 1904 by Englishwoman Mary Everest Boole, a mathematics instructor, produces curves and other flowing shapes by means of a series of perfectly straight lines."
Well, I did not know any of that and could not have described it better.
I read through the book, each basic stitch is carefully graphed, addition by additional stitch in a 3 color graph, which makes them easier to follow. There are indeed, step-by-step directions.
These are absolutely amazing figures created by, as they said, straight lines. The last page of the book shows many of these stitches, done in multiple colors. They say "Just to tempt you" and it does.
I look forward to the second volume of the 2 part series which is Mistake Stitch to Walneto Stitch.
This is a glossy cover paperbound book with a metal spiral binding, which is good, this is a book that you want to lay flat open. It has 52 pages.
