Jane Nicholas is an authority in Stumpwork, she is the author of 8 books on Stumpwork stitchery including The Complete Book of Stumpwork.
This is a Milner Craft Series book, one of Sally Milner Publishing's excdellent stitchery books from Australia.
In the introduction to this handsome book Jane Nicholas says her inspiration for this book was her fascination with medieval illuminated books such as The Book Of Hours. She was driven to embroider them and used the techniques of stumpwork to enhance them.
Stumpwork is, of course, raised or 3 dimensional stitchery. It is suitable for both needlepoint and embroidery.
For example, The Wild Pea and Longborn Moth Panel has a full color picture of the plant it is based on and some historical and botanical .information on it. The next page shows a completed stitched design complete with border design. The page after that shows the flower used in an illustrated text page.
A full page of templates for each detail of the design as well as for the whole flower, the next 3 pages are a list of Overall Requirements including thread. The instructions are for embroidery fabric but needlepoint canvas could easily be used instead.
Then another ful color photograph of the flower. The next few pages are step-by-step directions for each element of the design in black & white line drawing and some in color.
In total, The Wild Pea and Longborn Moth Panel with Border instructions are 26 pages long. Each of the design is given that depth of treatment.
Stumpwork Medieval Flora has 5 Botanical Specimen designs and 3 Illuminated Panel designs.
This is a new, large 11.5 X 8.5 inch book. Published by Sally Milner Publishing in 2009, this edition is the 2011 re-print. It has 288 pages. The book has a matte hard cover and doies not have a dust jacket.
