So many of the current Alphabet books are based on historic designs andf lettering, it is nice to see a book with a more miodern take. Plus, numbers are very rare among these books. You wouldn't think this was so but it is.

Di Van Niekerk is a very fine needlework teacher and author. She has made the areas of Ribbon Work and Stumpwork (often combined) her speciality. Embroidered Alphabets is ou-oprint now and has gotten very expensive & hard to find. I hate it that these excellent books go out-of-print so quickly. With three authors, the book's info did not fit in my "title space". It is: A Gardener's Book of Needlepoint by Jack Bodi, Meg Merrill and Catherine di Montezemolo. In the early 1980s B. Borssuck wrote several outstanding Needlework books. I am often asked about books of lettering and monograms for stitchers. There are a few good ones out there but none as comprehensive as this one. This is another of Graham Leslie McCallum's excellent sourcebooks containing 4000 Alphabets & Letters and including a CD with everything on it. This interesting book is about historical lettering applications and lettering design more then an actual instruction book. There are graphs, lettering templates and instructions but design does seem to be most of what this book is about.
It is a Batsford Book, another of thier fine books on stitcery and published in the UK, so the historical design is mostly English. Still is is an interesting read and full of pictures.

This is an interesting book, the Monograms & Ciphers shown are all originals, designed & drawn by the author, A.A. Turbayne and other members of the Carlton Studio. I had never heard of The Carlton Studio so I did a search for it. Several possibilities came back from the search. There is a Carlton College of Art in Minnesota. 79 Decorative Alphabets For Designers and Craftspeople is a very good collection of letter styles, they range all the way across the spectrum, from plain to very fancy, from small to large.
