Mira Silverstein is a very well-known needlework author. Her book Bargello Plus is a perennially popular and sought after book. She is also the author of the following small handy reference books, the titles all start with:
Mira Silverstein's -Guide to Combination Stitches, Guide To Upright Stitches, Guide To Slanted Stitches, Guide to Looped and Knotted Stitches and the less well-known book, Fun with Bargello and Needlepoint On A Shoestring with Roberta Frauwirth, and Fun With Applique.
This, however, was a book I did not know she had written until I found a copy. A very nice surprise.
While I often have some of her other books in stock here on NewNeedlepoint.com, the book of hers I am most familiar with is Bargello PLus. That is an excellent book, very good ideas, wonderful instructions and amazing pictures. What I would call a *real class act*.
This appears to be a class act, as well. it is not primarily an project and/or instruction book but it is a compilation of needlework styles and designs from arouynd the world, old & new.
I think the best way to tell you about the extraordinary contents of this book is to list the chapters. The book does have some projects, so it begins with MATERIALS, GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS, APPLIQUE & BEADWORK WITH THREADED NEEDLE.
AMERICAN NEEDLEWORK, ENGLISH NEEDLEWORK, IRISH NEEDLEWORK, SCANDINAVIAN NEEDLEWORK, DANISH NEEDLEWORK, FINNISH NEEDLEWORK, DUTCH NEEDLEWORK, HUNGARIAN NEEDLEWORK, RUMANIAN NEEDLEWORK, GUATEMALAN NEEDLEWORK, SAN BLAS APPLIQUE, DAHOMEY APPLIQUE, ISRAELI NEEDLEWORK, TURKISH NEEDLEWORK, INDIAN NEEDLEWORK, BURMESE NEEDLEWORK, CAMBODIAN NEEDLEWORK, CHINESE NEEDLEWORK, JAPANESE NEEDLEWORK
The final chapter is STITCH DETAILS.
Well, I am ompressed. The selections are chosen well. The only downside to this book (and I am afraid that it is a big one) is that many of the pictures are not in color.
There is a section in the middle with 31 pages of color pictures but that is out of a book with 179 pages.
I am sure we are all spolied, full color printing now is not big deal and a book like thgis, published now, would be all color pictures but this book is from 1978. Publishing in color was very different then.
Still, this is a fascinating book.
International Needlework Designs is a hard cover book puvlished by Charles Scribner & Son in 1978.
The book is in Very Good condition. The dust jacket is also in Very Good condition.
