Davie Hyman's book The Diagonal Basketweave is very rare and very expensive, becomming more so each time I find a copy.
Annother very good book on the basketweave needlepoint stitch is Jane D. Zimmerman's Proficiency With Basketweave. It is not as well know as Davie Hyman's book but I think it is a good alternative.
Jane D. Zimmerman is a needlepoint author with a fine collection of books but she is not as well known as other authors. I suspect part of the reason for that is that her self-published books are not promoted or advertised. The other reason is some of the books from the late 1970s to the late 2000s have not aged well.
In her introduction to this book, written in 1979: "This marvelous variation of the tent stitch (or continental stitch) has been the most frequently used of all the canvas stitches. Such an important stitch, and yet, the canvas worker can search through publication after publication and find little more then the most basic on how to work proficiently with it."
The chapters include: Working Method For The Stitches, General Working Rules, Working Rules For Basketweave, Working the Design.
This is a straight forward instructional book, it is all here in plain language and easily readable graphs. In black type on plain pages.
The book ends with a few pages of examples of designs.
Self published in 1979, this is a paperbound, plastic spiral bound book with heavy craft paper covers. The pages are printed on just one side, 16 printed pages full of information.
Proficiency With Basketweave is in Good condition. The covers are very lightly worn and bent at the corners. The pages inside are good, yellowed by age but otherwise fine, with no markings on them.
The plastic binding is broken in one place and appears fragile. I have augmented it with metal notebook rings, as you can see in my picture.
This is also a rare, hard to find book.
