The needlworker's Companion is a paperbound book with a metal spiral binding, all the pages are printed on heavy card stock. The book has a wrap-around cover and the smallish size (7 X 5 inches) makes this a good book to put in your needlepoint tote bag to have with you when you need it.

Create Your Home in Counted Thread by Mary Jenkins

Below the title on the cover are listed :
Diagonal Stitches
Cross Stitches
Straight Stitches
Decorative Stitches

Counted thread work is suitable to Needlepoint, Embroidery and Cross Stitch fabrics. I like the freedom Counted Thread gives you in terms of design, details & color.

From the back cover of the book : "Create beautiful samplers inspired by the subjects closest to your heart- your own home and garden."

Further down the back cover it describes the book's contents
" A wide selection of houses ready-charted with advice on how to chart your own
Instructions on how to add a garden and even pets to your sampler
A unique opportunity to use traditional stitches in a new & creative way
Easy-to-Follow charts, stitch diagrams and colour photographs throughout"

In paging through this book, I am impressed. The examples are wonderful. Not impossibly complex or overdone, just very good. The instructions and advice is excellent. There are pages of sample windows, doors, animals, shrubs & trees.

There is a section with very good diagrams of stitches. The only downside I can see (or imagine) with this book is that it was published in the UK so most of the houses are homes you might find there, not here in the USA.

Then again, many home styles are universal.

An amazing book.

First published in the UK as House & Garden Samplers in 1996. Retitled and published as a paperbound book by David & Charles in 2005.

Create Your Home In Counted Thread is a glossy cover paperbound book. It has 119 pages.

The Cross Stitcher's Bible by Jane Greenoff

The subtitle on the cover of this books says "The Definitive Manual of Essential Cross Stitch and Counted Thread Techniques".

The cover (and very informative it is) goes on to say that this is the New & Revised Edition with over 100 Charted Designs and Project Ideas with an excellent Stitch Library featuring Even More Choice.

Although I was a bit sarcastic above, this does seem like a truly complete book, it covers the basics, how to follow a chart, types of charts, equipment needed and more in the Getting Started Chapter.

All though the book, there are tips and hints like using blended filaments on page 46 in the Creative Options chapter.

There are 18 pages of stitches, all done in 3 color, mostly 4 to a page. There are 43 pages in the Chart Library, one or two to a page including a full floral alphabet and a chapter on finishing.

An impressive book. The Cross Stitcher'sBible is spiral bound inside a hard cover. I love books like this, they stay open where you want them to and lay flat.

Published by David & Charles Limited in 2007. Adapted from originals supplied by The Cross Stitcher Guild. The book has 233 pages.

ISBN # 978-01753-2545-2

A Potpourri of Pattern Encore by Ann Strite Kurz

This is the follow-up book to Ms. Strite-Kurz's excellent book, A Potpourri of Pattern.

The subtitle is: A Collection of Previously Unpublished Patterns for Canvas and Counted Thread Use.

I guess that says it all. The sections are:
Introductions & Techniques
Background Patterns
Border Patterns
Laid Fillings
Miscellaneous Composite Patterns
Diaper Patterns
Color Comparisons.

The author, as well as the original Potpourri of Pattern book has also written 9 other books. I am only familiar with 3 of them I think I will find out if I can get any of the others.

A Potpourri of Pattern Encore has just been released. It is a 2010 self published paperbound book with a plastic spiral binding. It has 130 Pages.

TNNA's How to Embroider including How to Cross-Stitch

Another basic and very helpful book from The National NeedleArts Association's Needlecraft Resource Library. This is the Revised Edition.

It is really a large booklet, packed with the essential things you need to know to begin Embroidery or Cross Stitch.

The inside back cover of the books says "This book is intended to get you started enjoying embroidery."

I think that says it all. This is an absolute beginner's book and very accessible and easy to understand for someone who has not stitched before.

This is large glossy cover pamphlet or booklet first published by the TNNA in 1990 and revised and re-released in 2002. It has 38 pages.

ISBN # 8-20638-01042-0 (I think)

GoldWork
StumpWork

The only name on the list I am unfamiliar with is Casalguidi.

From the back cover of the book " Space-Dyed threads offer exciting design possibilities with their beautiful, subtle color changes.

Cross Stitch by Jan Eaton

This book is part of The Art of Crafts Series. It is an interesting book. The cover stitching is just wonderful. I will post a larger picture of it further down in the listing.

This is another of the spiral bound hard cover books I like so well. They stay open, lay flat and are easy to use.

This book begins with a History of Cross-Stitch, Then a chapter of Basic & Practical Skills and a Special Techniques chapter.

There are 15 projects in the book:
Zodiac Birthday Cards
Easter Bunny Border
Tulip Table Linen
Rosebud Scented Sachets
Knot Garden Apron
Seaside Holiday Towels
Elizabethan Band Sampler
Autumn Leaves Sewing Set
Sepia Alphabet Sampler
Fruity Perserve Covers
Squirrel & Acorn Bookmarks
Crystal Snowflake Bowls
Christmas Ornaments
Traditional Motif Sampler
Valentine Keepsake

and a Finishing Touches chapter.

many of these designs are good ideas for gifts. I thought the list maybe sounded a little stogy but in looking through the designs, they are charming. Indeed, many would make wonderful gifts.

The charts are excellent. Each has a color chart and placement guide using DMC floss numbers. This is a "user friendly" book.

This is a close up of the cover

This is a new book Published in 2000 by The Crowood Press LTD in Ramsbury, Marlborough, Wiltshire, UK. Cross Stitch has 96 pages.

Left Handed Stitchery by Sally Cowan

With Illustrations by Kurt Loftus. Left Handed Stitching is a very much overlooked subject in needlework. I know of only one other book on the subject, the New York Times Book of Needlepoint for Left Handers and it is so rare it is difficult to find. It is long out of print.

This is a more concise book, aimed at Embroiders and useful to Cross-Stitchers. There are instructions for 45 stitches using 96 drawings.

In the forward the author, Sally Cowan who is also the author of Left Handed Sewing, says that she has gone beyond the basic sewing stitches in her first book to concentrate on Decorative Stitching for left handers.

As the Daughter and Mother of left handers I can tell you that it can be difficult to be different.

Left Handed Stitchery is a medium size glossy paperbound book. It was published by Schiffler Publishing in 1987 and has 61 pages.

This is a brand new book. ISBN #978-0-88740-110-7

Stitch Graffiti by Heather Holland-Daly

The subtitle for this books reads like this:
XX UNEXPECTED CROSS-STITCH XX

This does appear to be an unusual book. On the back cover it says
"Heather Holland-Daly , owner of the design company Monsterbubbles, puts a new twist on the classic craft of cross-stitch with this collection of 25 stylish, witty and playful designs for the modern stitcher"

Usually this is enough to send me screaming into the night but I am trying to be objective.

The book begins with the basics, the designs are mostly smallish and indeed unusual. There are a number of text based designs.

Some of the designs she calls Graffiti, some Tattoos and some Stuff. The designs are grouped under these chapter headings.

Each design has a full color chart with thread colors and placement. Each design has "possibilities" and finishing suggestions.

It is a fun looking book, really.

Glossy new paperbound, Stitch Graffiti was published by Interweave Press in 2008. The book has 111 pages.

ISBN# 978-1-59668-045-6

A Potpourri of Pattern by Ann Strite-Kurz

Another interesting Needlework book by Ann Strite-Kurz, the author of Creative Canvas Couching (what a surprise, I also have that here for sale), The Heart of Blackwork, Backgrounds, The Finishing Touch (which 2 I do not have here..yet).

The subtitle of this book is: A Collection of Original Open Patterns for Canvas and Linen Use.

That pretty much says it all. Her forword says " The main purpose of this book is to provide readers with some innovative ideas for stitch treatments"

There are 130 pages of them, all of these patterns look interesting to me. In fact, I am currently stitching something myself and I want an open stitch background. There are several good possibilities here.

There are no color pictures inside the book but the front and back covers, inside & out have a "potpourri" of different stitches shown with each identified.

This a new book, self-published in 1995, this copy is a first edition. It is a largish glossy paperbound book with a plastic spiral binding.

The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork by Lesley Wilkins

I have always been interested in Blackwork and drawn to it when I see it. So.....I saw this book on the wholesaler's list and thought, why not?

I am as much as a beginner in this as anyone.

I am quoting from the introduction "Blackwork is a counted thread method of needlework (ok, it said embroidery but I used the word needlework) using straight stitches in a contrasting color worked on even weave fabric (me again, or white & colored canvas).

The book appears to be quite comprehensive, it begins at the very beginning, showing you hw to pick the correct materials, the basic stitches, starting a design etc. and takes you all the way to mounting a finished piece.

There are a number of pages of designs and more pages with lots of "fill-in patterns". The pictures are mostly black & white (and why not, it is blackwork, after all).

The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork is a handsome glossy heavy paperbound book with 64 pages. It was first published by Search Press in Tunbridge Wells, England in 2002. This is the 2008 re-printed edition.

ISBN # 978-0-85532-937-2

Needlecraft: Skills & Techniques by Lucinda Ganderton

Lucinda Ganderton is the author of the classic stitch book Stitch Sampler. Stitch Sampler sold well here on NewNeedlepoint as a hard to find book and now it has been re-issued in a new edition (which I list here).

Needlecraft: Skills & Techniques is part of the Practical Home Handbook series.

Quoting from the back cover;
"Over 500 instructional illustrations-both step by step to show you how and glorious inspirational galleries of the best current & traditional Pieces

" Equipment, tools & materials all fully described and explained-how to choose them and how to use them

"Learn how to master the traditional crafts with ease and how to adapt classic approaches and designs for modern equipment and contemporary projects"

"The primary teaching manual for all new needlecrafters and a standard reference work for advanced practitioners"

I think that last sentence says it all. This book is full of tips and techniques, in skimming through it I learned a few thgings I did not know.

THis would be an essentail book for beginners and useful to use veteren stitchers, as well. Packed with full color pictures and with Lucinda Ganderton's needlework knowledge

ISBN # 978-0-7548-0810-7

Selling New Books is very different from selling my used, hard-to-find or rare books. New books have a set retail price and I have to compete in the marketplace.

NewNeedlepoint.com will be charging the full retail price for these fine new books but I will mail them for free. Please consider the Free Shipping as a Discount.
