4 Way Bargello by Dorothy Kaestner, Revised Edition

The Revised hardcover copy of Dorothy Kaestner's wonderful book, 4 Way Bargello. I have a copy of this book myself and have sold so many here I now buy them in multiples, not 1 at a time

I have only seen one other Revised Edition of this book. They are rare.

4-Way Bargello is a very advanced form of Bargell Needlepoint. The patterns are formed using mitered stitches to join the sections into a whole.

The careful counting involved is a challenge but when it is done, 4-Way Bargello is absolutely amazing. (disclaimer: I have not yet stitched a completely successful 4-Way Bargello)

Dorothy Kaestner's 4 Way Bargello graphs are very clear and understandable, they make it almost look easy. There is a chapter included on designing your own 4 Way Bargello.

The Stitch Graphs and Pattern Pictures next to them are in B&W, There is a color picture of each pattern & design in the center of the book.

This book was published by Charles Scribner & Sons, New York in 1972 with pictures by George Kaestner. it is a hardcover book with 93 pages.

There is no dust jacket with this book but as you can see, the hardcover is in very good condition.

<center><img src="images/products/4wayhard.jpg"></center>

The pages are very good and the spine is tight. I don't think this book was opened much, judging by the condition of the spine.

Trianglepoint by Sherlee Lantz

Another great needlepoint book by Sherlee Lantz, the author of A Pageant of Pattern for Needlepoint Canvas. This book is subtitled "From Persian Pavilions to Op Art with One Stitch. Ms Lantz does seem to like the idea of a "pavilions". The book was published by Viking Press in 1978.

This is my 3nd copy of this book for sale here. It does seem to sell fast.

I List this book in both the Bargello & the Needlepoint Reference book categories, it belongs in both.

TrianglePoint is a new idea in needlepoint. I have stitched this pattern, using it for a border on a Bargello Design of mine. This is how that limited size border looked

<center><img src="images/products/wavesfinal.jpg"></center>

I recently had an email discussion with the author Shirlee Lantz. She says there is no way to mitre the corners in TrianglePoint. She says she will let me know if she ever solves this.

I found TrianglePoint very easy to stitch, with great results. This book has many color pictures and very clear stitch graphs. In fact, it is basically the same stitch, just different sizes.

The design charts, how to put the triangles together to make the designs shown, are in the back of the book.

This book is in good condition, It does not have a dust jacket. There is a spot on the back cover where the very top layer of the hardcover has been peeled away.

The book inside is, as you can see, in very good condition. The spine is good. A previous owners name is written (small) on the inside cover page.

This book is getting harder to get. I have sold so many of them here. The quality of the copies is not as good as the first ones, still...it is the same book.

The dust jacket was in terrible condition, ripped, ragged and dirty. I was surprised to see how good the book was inside it. I did not want to put this nice book back inside the awful dust jacket.

The hard cover of the book is black & white, it shows badly on my white background.

Florentine Embroidery by Barbara Snook

There is something wrong with my page picture. There is no m ark or rip in this book. I will take another picture tomorrow.

As I mentioned in my listing for Barbara Snook's other book with a similar title "The Craft of Florentine Embroidery" this book is a different book.

Florentine Embroidery was published in 1967. It is a more advanced Bargello Needlepoint book, right from the start. This was a very Hard-To-Find book.

it does have a similar introduction listing the other names Florentine Embroidery has been known as. For the purposes of the review I am going to use it's modern name "Bargello Needlepoint" (or just Bargello).

The book has a few chapters on the history of Bargello. This is very interesting stuff which is not in the other book.

Then the book goes briefly into the basics of Bargello, techniques etc. The there are 32 pages of Bargello stitch patterns.

Then a very unusual chapter, Stitches that Link Easily with Bargello stitches. The only other book I know of that approaches this is Mira Silverstein's Bargello Plus (yes, I do list it here..of course).

Last is the chapter called "The Present Day Use of Florentine Embroidery" The designs here are similar to the ones she uses in "The Craft of Florentine Embroidery" going from easy to hardest.

The tone and instruction in this book seems to me to be leaning towards a more advanced stitcher but my Needlework Book Bibliography gives it a B for difficulty so I could be wrong (with A for easiest and D for hardest)

This is a good book but I do not recommend buying both of them. Either or.

This is a hardcover book published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1967. It has 160 pages.

Florentine Embroidery is in surprisingly good condition for a book this old. The pages are very faintly yellowed with age, there is no foxing.

<center><img src="images/products/snookflorhard.jpg"></center>

The dust jacket was awful, I was surprised how good the book inside was, so I tossed the DJ. The spine is perfect.

*Gift Quality* Needlepoint Bargello by Dorothy Kaestner

Needlepoint Bargello is another wonderful Bargello and 4-way Bargello Book by Dorothy Kaestner. This book has 25 entirely new 4-Way Bargello Patterns. Each has a chart and a full color picture of the finished piece. The book also includes 32 "regular" Bargello designs as well as something unusual.

Needlepoint Bargello's chapter 7 has 5 Snowflake designs and a paperweight design done in Tent Stitch 4-Way Bargello. I have never seen anything like this in any of my other Bargello books. I have this book in my own Bargello Book Collection. I have not yet stitched one of these unique designs. I have good intentions but not enough time (sound familiar?).

The photographs in this book are taken by George F. Kaestner. It was published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1974.

The Needlepoint Bargello Book is hardbound and in excellent condition. Very much Gift Quality. The only thing I can see wrong with it is the back cover dust jacket has a small fold on the inside flap. It is on the lower corner.

There are no markings, this would make a wonderful gift (the holidays are coming!)

<center><img src="images/products/kaestnerbargpage.jpg"></center>

There is an interesting picture on the back dust jacket of this book. It shows Ms. Kaestner teaching a class. They are in a very small, narrow room with rolls of fabric hung on the wall. There are a few 4-Way Bargello Canvases hung on the wall and from the fabric rolls.

The students are all seated on metal folding chairs, each has a copy of this book in her lap and is listening to Ms. Kaestner. Some are taking notes. No one is stitching.

I have sold so many of Mrs. Kaestner'as books that I now buy them in multiples. No more 1 at a time.

The Craft of Florentine Embroidery by Barbara Snook

I have 2 books by Barbara Snook with very similar names. This book is The Craft of Florentine Embroidery which was published in 1971 and the other is Florentine Embroidery published in 1967. They are different books.

The one I am listing here is 1971's The Craft of Florentine Embroidery. The author, in her introduction says the term "Florentine is used to cover varieties of Florentine Stitch and Hungarian Point." it is also called Flame Stitch or Lightning Patterns etc.

All these various terms are grouped under the title of Bargello now.

This book starts at the beginning, choosing the right canvas and threads for Bargello (Florentine Embroidery will be Bargello for the purposes of the review).

She demonstrates the few basic stitches and clearly graphs out some of the most common Bargello patterns used. There are 39 pages of Bargello Stitch patterns with between 1 and 4 patterns per page.

Then she discusses "The Present Use of Florentine Embroidery" which I find an odd name for this 3 page chapter.

The Craft of Florentine Embroidery has 22 designs, with directions and graphs ranging from the easiest to the hardest.

This book was published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1971.It is a glossy paperbound book with 95 pages. I do not recommend buying both these books. Either or.

This book is in much better condition than the last copy I sold. The heavy paper cover is intact with just a fold mark on the bottom right corner of the back cover.

I do want to mention that the pictures inside are all B & W, shades of gray etc but no color pictures.

The inside of the book is very good and the spine is tight. it does not look as if it was often opened. This copy cost me a lot more then the last one. Go figure.

Mira Silverstein's Bargello Plus

This is not a basic book on Bargello. It is not for beginners. Bargello Plus has unusual ideas and very interesting original designs featuring Bargello stitchery. The Bargello pattern stitches are combined with other "regular" needlepoint stitches to create the overall designs.

The graphs and the instructions are very clear and complete. There is a section of Bargello Patterns and a section on free-form Bargello.

There are 2 sections of good full color pictures. The designs and the colors are striking and original indeed.

My needlework bibliography gives this book a C for difficulty (with A the easiest and D the hardest).

It sold almost immediately when I listed it here, I now have 4 more copies. They are increasingly difficult to get in good condition. This is the best condition of the 4 I currently have.

Bargello Plus is a large size hardcover book published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York in 1973. It has 90 pages.

This is not the exact picture of the book you will get, it is, however, very close to it. I sold that one and was too lazy to re-do the photograph since they are so similar.

The dust jacket is OK, it has a few small taped up tears and is ragged at the edges. The hardcover is faded at the edges. They are all like this. The spine is tight.

A former owner has embossed their name on the first title page.

The actual book inside is very good, as you can see.

*Gift Quality* The Bargello Book by Frances Salter

This is the original version of this book, published in 1993 by A. C. Black in London. This is a glassy paperbound book, the first of these I have seen. It is in remarkable condition except for some writing on the inside cover page. I have covered that nicely with my tasteful "NewNeedlepoint" sticker.

This little book is one of the books that everyone who is interested in Bargello Needlepoint reaches for first. It is just a book of Bargello stitches, each one shown in color and graphed. The graphs are rated by the difficulty of the pattern. The book was published by A & C Black in London 1991.

Despite being almost 20 years old this book looks & feels fresh and contemporary. In fact, I was surprised that is was published that long ago. The The Bargello Book is still in print, I have new copies of it on NewNeedlepoint as well in the Category New Books.

The author has a fondness for samples stitched in graduations of the same color. They are wonderfully effective in Bargello.

In addition, the mixed color use here is superb. These are all the classic Bargello stitches and the graphs are clear and easy to follow. This is the book I reach for first and anyone I talk to who does Bargello mentions to this book, as well.

Also surprising is how rare this book has become. This is the 3rd copy of this book I have listed here, each one I buy to replace one I sold is more expensive then the last one.

The Bargello Book was published by A. C. Black in London in 1993. It has 74 pages.

The Bargello Book is in excellent condition inside and out. From the spine it looks like it has hardly ever been opened. This would make a great gift for someone who loves Bargello (as I do).

Free-Form Bargello by Gigs Stevens

There are so many things I love about this book. I love the unique idea, the forms and colors used and the author's name "Gigs". On the back over is her picture, she is a good looking blonde. I imagined "Gigs" would have been more unusual looking but you never know, do you?

This book was published by Charles Scribner's & sons in 1977. I think it may be unique in it's subject. It is not really a rare or hard to find book, but I think it is terrific. A former owner has written her name on the title page.

The book has many B & W drawings and a number of color pictures, what it does not have is many graphs. The designs really are free form, even when they incorporate a figure of some sort. I think the concept and the execution of these designs is amazing.

Even after thumbing through this book again, (I have a copy of this on my own bookshelves) I find myself wishing I had some time to stitch one of these for myself.

The book is in very good condition, despite the worn appearance of the cover. Inside the book is excellent, the spine is tight. It appears to have been rarely opened.

Florentine Embroidery by Barbara Muller

I had no idea what I was going to get when I ordered this book. There is so little information out there about these out-of-print books. I had not heard of this book or this author before.

I was wonderfully surprised when this lovely little book. Although the author calls this book "Florentine Embroidery" it is really a Bargello Needlepoint Book. it is subtitled "All you need to know for perfect results".

I know there is quite a bit of confusion out there about the terms "Bargello Needlepoint" and Florentine Embroidery".

In the strictest sense Florentine Embroidery is Bargello with a differing Stitch count.

Then again, Bargello has traditionally been called Florentine Embroidery due to it's roots in Florence, Italy.

It can be very confusing but I digress.

This is a very nice Bargello Needlepoint Book. There is a blurb inside the front cover which reads
" The complete guide to working Florentine stitches from choosing the right canvas to blocking the finished embroidery with over 30 patterns to embroider".

The pattern graphs are clear and easy to read, most of the pictures of the stitched samples are in color.

This edition of Florentine Embroidery was published in the UK in 1989. The original book was published in Germany in 1986. it is translated by Janet Winslow. This is the 2nd copy of this book I have listed here, this copy was even harder to find than the first one was.

The book is in very good condition. The glossy paperbound cover is slightly worn and someone has written a price on the inside cover page. Florentine Embroidery appears to have hardly been opened.

I had to hold it open to take a picture of a age and to read the publishing info.

Florentine Canvaswork by Dorothy Phelan

This is one of my favorite Bargello Needlepoint reference books. I have a few that I refer to constantly and this is one of them. This copy is in very fine condition. It is only kept from being Gift Quality by some numbers/prices written in pencil on the inside back cover and a small tear (which I taped up) on the back of the dust jacket.

This is another fine Batsford English Needlework book, published in the UK. The American version, published the same year in New York, is the same book but it is titled Traditional Bargello..

There has been some confusion about this book. It is the HardCover version printed in England.

The cover and the contents are the same but the name is different. The UK edition is a hard bound book with 94 pages.

This is a book you can read and do the projects and learn Bargello Needlepoint, which is also called Florentine CanvasWork. This is where it gets a bit confusing. Florentine Embroidery is another form of Bargello Needlepoint. It used varied stitch counts rather than the Traditional Bargello's same counts through out.

But Bargello Needlepoint is also called Florentine Canvaswork, truly confusing.

Dorothy Phelan's wonderful book is divided into 2 distinct parts. The first part is a study of the history and "characteristics" of this needle art and a comprehensive guide to threads, stitches and equipment.

The second part has large, full color and color-coded design charts (or graphs). They include step-by-step instructions. The canvas and threads, plus the amounts needed are listed as well. The projects are placed in the book by skill level, the easiest first, going to the most challenging towards the end of the book.

The graphs demonstrating the stitches are done in full color, making the easy to follow and the color changes simple and clear.

I have stitched many of these and find her directions to be clear and complete and her charts easy to follow. Each project has a full color picture of it completed, as well.

I consider Dorothy Phelan to be a Master Teacher of Bargello Needlepoint, what ever she calls it.

Florentine Canvaswork was published in 1991 by B.T. Batsford publishers in London. It is hardbound and the pages are in as good condition as the outside, if not better.

Elsa Williams Bargello: Florentine Canvas Work

Elsa Williams is one of the better known needlework designers. Her designs and products include needlepoint, embroidery, crewel work, cross stitch and more. The needlework products bearing her name are too numerous to mention.

This is Elsa William's Bargello book. It is one of the most important of the early books on Bargello needlepoint. it is another fine Van Nostrand Reinhold book, published in 1967. It is hard cover and has 64 pages.

The book is very good condition, the dust jacket was in very bad condition. I know dust jackets are important to a book's value but I can't see keeping a filthy and foxed paper cover on an otherwise good or very good book,

This was indeed hard-to-find. They are out there but the conditon is often just terrible. The pages are a bit yellowed at the edges, due to age and The Yarn Mart of Little Rock, Arkansas put their stitcker on the inside front cover page

<center><img src="images/products/elsabarg3.jpg"></center>

Elsa Williams patterns are wonderful, her color use is spectacular, not dated at all, despite the 1967 publication of this book. There are only 22 color pictures in this book, the rest are black & white photographs and there are no charts.

<center><img src="images/products/elsabarg3page.jpg"></center>

The photos of the patterns are so close-up and detailed, in both the B&W and the color pictures, that a chart is almost (not quite but almost) not necessary.

Everytime I open this book, I get ideas. I think this book is as close to a historical view of the 20th century of development of Bargello in America as we will see, by a definitive author and authority.

Bargello: An Explosion in Color by Margaret Boyles

If you have read many of the used book listings here you know I taught myself Needlepoint & Bargello Needlepoint from books. This is the #1 book that taught me to stitch, and stitch correctly, Bargello Needlepoint.

Margaret Boyles is a Master Teacher, her directions are concise and clear. her graphs are in full color and good size you don't have to peer at them with a magnifying glass.

I have sold 4 copies of this book so far. I had trouble finding another in good condition> Each time I replace this book, it costs more than the last time. I know the price is high, it reflects the "market". Bargello: An Explosion in Color is becoming very rare and very expensive.

The book is set up in sensibly, going from easy to stitch all the way to advanced & 4 Way Bargello. It took me 3 months to go from easy to fairly advanced but I will admit there are some patterns that are still beyond me and I haven't yet managed a successful 4-Way Bargello.

Ms Boyles begins the book with a primer on materials, then stitches. Then Bargello tips and understanding Bargello design. My first Bargello project, after Ripple of course, everyone does Ripples first, was Canvas 11 from page 45.

I stitched my way through the book. Not full size projects but sample sizes to learn the stitches. As I finished Canvas 52, an Average Level Florentine Embroidery Flat Top Pattern on page 104 I began to get very busy building NewNeedlepoint.com.

But I wanted to try an Advanced Pattern. I stitched Canvas 53, on page 106. It came out very good, good enough that I offered the pattern in my (now closed, never sold even 1) Bargello Category.

The book has further sections on Mitred Bargello, which is what she calls 4-Way Bargello and finishing & mounting instructions.

Anyway, I know I am talking about myself here. I want you to understand how great this book is.

This copy is good, it would be very good if it didn't have some foxing on the cut page ends at the top of the book. I doesn't seem to go down on the pages more than 1/8 of an inch anywhere but still.....I want to show you a very close up picture of this.

<center><img src="images/products/explosion4detail.jpg"></center>

A previous owner has written her name on the inside cover page The book inside is very good except for the foxing on the cut ends of the pages on just one side. The spine is tight and the dust jacket is good. There were a few small tears and bent edges which I taped up.

<center><img src="images/products/explosion4page.jpg"></center>

Bargello Magic by Pauline Fischer & Anabel Lasker

The subtitle for this book is "How To Design Your Own". The authors of this book say on their dust jacket " 2 leading designers analyze patterns and show how to obtain beautiful originals through careful selection of colors and materials".

There are examples of both good design and bad design along with solutions to design problems. Every Bargello Needlepoint pattern is shown in color as well as black & white. What this book lacks is many useable graphs.

As a Bargello design primer this book would be useful.

My Needlepoint Book Bibliography (Needlework by Catherine J Sestay and I am daily grateful for this book) calls this book a rich source of beautiful bargello patterns. I agree with that.

It also says the instructions are detailed and the authors encourage their readers to create their own designs on the basis of the samples. OK, I can see this too.

There is a chapter on Border designs. Bargello Magic is rated a B for difficulty (with A easiest and D hardest).

This is hardcover book published by Holt, Rinehart & Winston in 1972.

This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket is somewhat yellowed by age but otherwise the book is is in very, very good condition.

Bargello Borders by Nancy Hall & Jean Riley

This is an very much a Bargello Niche book, it is just Bargello Needlepoint Borders, that's all. It contains many of the possible variations, clearly graphed out including the corners. Having the corners fully graphed will become very important to you, once you begin to stitch one of these. Mitred corners are not as easy as you might think (which I found out the hard way).

The book is set up as a workbook, there are clear directions and relatively easy to read graphing. You do not have to be very familiar with Bargello Needlepoint to use this book but I don't recommend it to beginners. My bibliography gives it a C grade for difficulty (with A being easiest & D hardest). I would put it between B & C myself but there are things here for an advanced stitcher, as well.

The book makes of point of showing you how these patterns intended for borders can also be wonderful geometric design motifs, as well.

There is a section in the center of the book showing each border design used on a piece of stitch needlepoint. Beautifully done things.

Published by Needlemania in Franklin, Michigan in 1974. This book remains a contemporary design reference. Bargello Borders is paperbound and has 159 pages.

The book is in good condition for it's age. The covers are yellowed but intact. There is just 1 spot of foxing on the first inside page. I could not find anymore. The spine is tight and the pages are slightly yellowed at the edges but otherwise OK.

Bargello Antics by Dorothy Kaestner

This wonderful book is both hard-to-find and rare. Dorothy Kaestner's Bargello Antics features 4 Way Bargello, and Mrs. Kaestner knows her stuff.

Her designs are wonderful, her color use terrific. Every design is shown in full color in the color picture section of the book. * pages of pictures taken by George F. Kaestner, who I assume is her husband.

This is one of the best condition copies of this book I have ever seen. it is hard bound and the book and the dust jacket are just about perfect. The dust jacket is yellowed a bit but the pages are very good, as you can see.

<center><img src="images/products/anticspage.jpg"></center>

Bargello Antics was published by Charles Scribner & sons in 1979. This copy does not appear to have been read or even opened much.

American Heirloom Bargello by Millie Hines

This is a beginner level Bargello Needlepoint book, it is rated an A, which is the easiest designation.

The bargello designs are adaptations of Navaho Rugs and early American Quilt patterns. There are 24 designs, with graphs, color photographs, yarn or thread colors used and working instructions. What the book doesn't have is anything telling you how much yarn or thread you need.

But I can remedy that. In general Bargello eats up lots of thread or yarn.

There are several sections in the front of the book telling you how to begin, this is a good book for an absolute beginner to Bargello.

This is a small, tall & narrow paperbound book. American Heirloom Bargello was published by Crown Publishers in New York in 1977. This is the second copy of this book listed here.

This book is in good condition. The covers are somewhat yellowed from age but they are not ripped, bent or damaged beyond the expected edge and corner wear. A previous owner wrote their name on the front cover , it is faint and hard to see.

The pages inside are good, it does not seem like the book was opened very often, the spine is good. It appears there is a dark mark running down the long side of the cut pages. It is not that, they set all the pictures at the very edge of the page and you are seeing that, there. I didn't know what it was at first. I figured it out.

Working On Canvas by Margaret Rivers: A Batsford CraftMasters Book

This book, from the Batsford Series on Canvas Work, or Needlepoint, is surprisingly unusual. right from the start, this is a book for an more experienced stitcher.

There are unusual techniques and ideas in this book and quite a bit of Bargello as well. There is ribbon work, mixed media needlepoint, etc. There are some design ideas here that are quite "painterly".

It is not a stitch reference, it is an idea and inspiration book and *inspired* is the word for it. I did not know anything about this book when I ordered it, I am glad I did.

This is a larger size hard cover book with a glossy cover, it never did have a dust jacket. The cover is somewhat shopworn but the inside is perfect, I don't think it has been opened much, the spine is very tight and the pages unmarked.

The Pattern Library Needlepoint Edited by Amy Carrroll

I was not going to list this small book, I assumed it was another needlepoint stitch book but I was wrong.

This is a reference book of Needlepoint Patterns. They are 85 patterns you can use as motifs or as repeating patterns or backgrounds. They are very well done, all the pictures are in color, with graphs and complete directions.

There is a large section of Bargello patterns, as well.

The chapters are:
Basic Techniques
Straight Stitches
Diagonal Stitches
Crossed Stitches
Star Stitches
Looped Stitches
Color Stitch Patterns
Bargello Patterns
Borders
Mitered Corners
and an index

Remember, these are patterns using this type of stitch, not just the stitches.

Published by Ballentine Books in 1981 The Pattern Library is s amll glossy cover paperbound book. It is the perfect size to slip into your needlepoint tote bag.

This book is in good condition. I appears to have been damp (not wet) once and the pages dried somewhat "wavy". There is also some edge yellowing of the pages and the cover. It is in better condition than not (if you know what I mean)

Needlepoint Stitchery by Margaret Boyles

I know I have often mentioned Margaret Boyles many excellent book on Bargello Needlepoint. As far as I know, this is Ms. Boyles only book on regular needlepoint. This is an interesting and very forward thinking book. When it was published, in 1974, few if any other needlepoint books mentioned Decorative Stitching.

Needlepoint Stitchery discusses it, in depth, as well as putting 2 versions of the same design on it's cover. One is stitched in *plain stitch* and one is done in a variety of Decorative Stitches.

I suspect Ms. Boyles was always an innovator. There are some unique subjects here.
"Basic Tent Stitch is demonstrated in relation to the 4 techniques for creating it".
with an explaination of why and where each technique should be used. What she goes on to descibe is the difference between the accepted version of the *basic Stitch*. The ahlf cross stitch, the Continental or Tent Stitch, Basketweave Stitch and Diagonal Stitch. I had not seen diagonal stitch before.

All her decorative Stitches, here called *fancy Stitches (I love that name) are shown in full color pictures and 3 color graphs, blue on the black & white. This type of graph makes it much easier to duplicate a stitch.

There is a Design Portfolio with 9 designs shown and graphed for stitching. A small Chapter on Bargello Needlepoint and a glossery of embroidery stitches that can be adapted to needlepoint. There are also a number of Bargello Needlepoint instructions as well as 4-way Bargello.

This is a valuable book by a Master Teacher. This will be third copy of this book I have listed here.

Needlepoint Stitchery was published by Macmillan Publishing in New York and Collier MacMillan in London. The is not publication date noted but this books is a "First Printing".

This hardcover book is in very good condition. The dust jacket is very good if not better and the inside pages are very good. Someone has written a date and some numbers on the inside cover page, other then that the book is unmarked.

Needlepoint and Pattern by Gloria Katzenberg

This is my 2nd copy of this book, the first one sold fast. Also strangely enough, the dust cover is tattered and the book inside is good. Just like the 1st one. Go figure.

The book is subtitled: Themes and Variations. it has a full chapter on technique and a large assortment of beautiful patterns, all shown in color, with clear graphs on the facing page.

Needlepoint and Patterns has many Bargello Needlepoint patterns as well as Needlepoint.

This is a large, hardcover book published by Macmillan in New York and Collier Macmillan in London in 1974.

There is a wonderful quote on the page before the contents:
"In this rare art yet here they may discerne
Some things to teach them is they list to learne"
John Taylor "The Needles Excellency" 1640

As you can see from my picture the inside of this book is in very good condition. The hard cover is in good condition too but the dust jacket is a ragged at the edges.

Since I took my picture of the dust jacket, I hope done some scotch-taping of the dust cover, to keep it from ripping further. I do wish I did not have to keep them with these books. I long to throw the awful dust jackets away and keep the good books inside.

The Margaret Boyles Book of NeedleArt

A different sort of book from Margaret Boyles. Most of her books are more Needlepoint or Bargello Needlepoint reference books or workbooks.

This book has designs to stitch and they cover a large range of types of needlepoint and stitchery. There are canvas work needlepoint designs, a number of Bargello Needlepoint designs, there are some designs done on linen and some frankly crewel work designs.

Of course, all are done with Margaret Boyles' excellent instruction and clear graphs and diagramming. She really is a Master Teacher.

This is a larger hardcover book with 160 pages. It was published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovitch in 1978.

This book does not have a dust cover. I am sure it had one once, but not now. The book is in very good condition.

The hard cover is clean and unstained or marked. the pages inside are very good and the binding is tight.
