Florentine Embroidery by Barbara Muller

I was wonderfully surprised with this lovely little book. The author calls this book "Florentine Embroidery". It is really a Bargello Needlepoint Book. As you might know, the the UK and Europe Bargello is called Florentine Embroidery or Hungarian Point.

The book is subtitled "The Complete Guide to Working Florentine Stitches, From Choosing the Right Canvas to Blocking the Finished Embroidery with over 50 Patterns to Embroider".

I began listing this book as a used book, I did not know there were new copies available.

Florentine Embroidery has become increasingly rare (and it never was easy to find). If you look around, you will see that I am not asking nearly as much as some other rare book sellers. Still, it is a lot of money. I know this, this is the rare book market.

Ms Muller's book is not well known and is rare, it is a welcome addition to the very few great book about Bargello Needlepoint.

I have the last few copies the publisher had. He says, despite my begging, that unless I want to get 1200 copies, he can't publish this anymore. I got these by paying above cover value for them.

I know there is quite a bit of confusion out there about the terms "Bargello Needlepoint" and Florentine Embroidery".

In the strictest sense Florentine Embroidery is Bargello with a differing Stitch count.

Then again, Bargello has traditionally been called Florentine Embroidery due to it's roots in Florence, Italy.

It can be very confusing but I digress.

This is a excellent Bargello Needlepoint Book.

The pattern graphs are clear and easy to read, most of the pictures of the stitched samples are in color.

Florentine Embroidery was published in the UK in 1989. The original book was published in Germany in 1986. it is translated by Janet Winslow.

This edition was published in 1993 by Lacis Press in Berkley, Califortnia and I want to thank them for digging around and fining these copies for me.

ISBN: 0-916986-54-4

I also have a few copies of this book used, all 4 are in very good condition. Of course, that is not nearly the same as new. These are new.

Traditional Bargello by Dorothy Phelan

This is the American version of Dorothy Phelan's excellent book, Florentine Canvaswork. I can find no difference between them besides the title. Even the thread amounts are still given in both metric and US inches.

I suppose there are some terminology differences. The British (and most Europeans) call Bargello Needlepoint Florentine Canvaswork or Florentine Embroidery.

What follows is the listing from the UK edition:

"This is one of my favorite Bargello Needlepoint reference books. I have a few that I refer to constantly and this is one of them.

This is another fine Batsford English Needlework book, published in the UK. The American version, published the same year in New York, is the same book but it is titled Traditional Bargello.

Although this book was published in the UK, the measurements are given, though out the book, in both metric & inches. Florentine Canvaswork is a wonderful book.

There has been some confusion about this book. This is the HardCover edition printed in England.

This is a book you can read and do the projects and learn Bargello Needlepoint, which is also called Florentine CanvasWork. This is where it gets a bit confusing. Florentine Embroidery is another form of Bargello Needlepoint. It used varied stitch counts rather than the Traditional Bargello's same counts through out.

But Bargello Needlepoint is also called Florentine Canvaswork, truly confusing.

Dorothy Phelan's wonderful book is divided into 2 distinct parts. The first part is a study of the history and "characteristics" of this needle art and a comprehensive guide to threads, stitches and equipment.

The second part has large, full color and color-coded design charts (or graphs). They include step-by-step instructions. The canvas and threads, plus the amounts needed are listed as well. The projects are placed in the book by skill level, the easiest first, going to the most challenging towards the end of the book.

The graphs demonstrating the stitches are done in full color, making the easy to follow and the color changes simple and clear.

I have stitched many of these and find her directions to be clear and complete and her charts easy to follow. Each project has a full color picture of it completed, as well.

I consider Dorothy Phelan to be a Master Teacher of Bargello Needlepoint, what ever she calls it.

Florentine Canvaswork was published in 1991 by B.T. Batsford publishers in London."

Traditional Bargello is a glossy cover paperbound book. I was not sure if my 2 very rare copies were new or just used in exceptional quality. It turns out they are new, the last 2 the publisher had (and I got them by pleading and paying way mire then the cover price).

Although it is a new book, since I already have the inside page picture here, you might as well see it.

ISBN: 0-312-06882

BTW, if you think my price is high, go look at this book, new, on Alibris.

Left Handed Stitchery by Sally Cowan

With Illustrations by Kurt Loftus. Left Handed Stitching is a very much overlooked subject in needlework. I know of only one other book on the subject, the New York Times Book of Needlepoint for Left Handers and it is so rare it is difficult to find. It is long out of print.

This is a more concise book, aimed at Embroiders and useful to Cross-Stitchers. There are instructions for 45 stitches using 96 drawings.

In the forward the author, Sally Cowan who is also the author of Left Handed Sewing, says that she has gone beyond the basic sewing stitches in her first book to concentrate on Decorative Stitching for left handers.

As the Daughter and Mother of left handers I can tell you that it can be difficult to be different.

Left Handed Stitchery is a medium size glossy paperbound book. It was published by Schiffler Publishing in 1987 and has 61 pages.

This is a brand new book. ISBN #978-0-88740-110-7

Selling New Books is very different from selling my used, hard-to-find or rare books. New books have a set retail price and I have to compete in the marketplace.

NewNeedlepoint.com will be charging the full retail price for these fine new books but I will mail them for free. Please consider the Free Shipping as a Discount.

The Bargello Book by Frances Salter

I thought this book was out-of-print, I guess it was for a while. This is a new 2006 re-printing of the original 1993 classic Bargello Pattern book.

I have several used or not new copies of the 1995 A & C Black, London edition of this book for sale here in my rare Bargello Books category including one Gift Quality Edition. I was under the impression that these were the only editions available.

I have compared this 2006 LACIS Publications edition with my British originals and they seem the same, despite a re-working of the cover.

This is, of course, one of the most commonly referenced and used of the Bargello Needlepoint books.

This LACIS edition is a brand new glossy paperbound book, it is the same smaller size as the original edition, measuring 6.75 X 7.5 inches. It has 73 pages and 34 Bargello Needlepoint patterns. ISBN #978-1-891656-1

Selling New Books is very different from selling my used, hard-to-find or rare books. New books have a set retail price and I have to compete in the marketplace.

NewNeedlepoint.com will be charging the full retail price for these fine new books but I will ship them for free. Please consider the Free Shipping as a Discount.

The Best Bargello Book by June McKnight

I think these books by June McKnight are terrific. She is a great Needlepoint Teacher and her books explain & show you exactly what she intends to, no muss, no fuss.

Still, I have to take exception to her title "The Best Bargello Book". It is, indeed a very good, even a excellent Bargello Book, but the best?

All my carping aside. This is larger then the usual June McKnight books but in the same basic format.

She begins at the beginning, with the canvas, goes to threads, the first stitch. She explains the names and tries to clear up the confusion, there is a "brief historical glance".

Then a chapter of what she calls "Easy Tracking Row Patterns" Each stitch has 2 facing pages. The full color and large sample of the stitch is done in multiple colors so you can easily see what exactly she is doing. There is also a very god graph. The chapter has 19 stitches.

BTW, her names are different from the traditional names, they are very witty.

Then she has a chapter on Medallion Stitches. Again, very well done, stitched and charted. Medallion stitches can sometimes be a bit confusing, she makes them clear and easy. There are 11 of these stitches.

Her final chapter is Advanced Variations. Same quality stitching & graphs for these harder stitches. There are 9 of them.

The Best Bargello Book is a brand new book, it measures 9 X 6.5 inches, it is larger then her standard books. It has a metal spiral binding and is paperbound. The covers are protected front & back by clear plastic overcovers.

Self-published by June McKNight with a copyright date of 2008. The book has 89 pages plus an index.

Selling New Books is very different from selling my used, hard-to-find or rare books. New books have a set retail price and I have to compete in the marketplace.

Christmas Bargello Medallions by June McKnight

The subtitle to this book is "And Twinkling Backgrounds". Another of Ms McKnight's wonderful book on Needlepoint & Bargello Needlepoint.

According to the author, the idea for these Bargello Medallion Christmas Ornaments came from a customer who wanted to stitch each of her friends a Christmas Tree Ornament. This was the spark.

Each ornament design uses 2 pages. One one side is a full color picture of the finished ornament, the other facing page has the chart. As always the charts are clear and easy to understand.

This is a paperbound book with a clear plastic sheet protecting the cover. It has a metal spiral binding and measures 5" X 5.5".

Christmas Bargello Medallions is self-published by June McKnight with a copyright date of 2008.

Beautiful Bargello by Joyce Petschek

This is, without doubt, a beautiful showcase book of Bargello Needlepoint. The fact that it has very well done full color graphs, thread and yarn quantities lists and directions is like frosting on this cake.

Ms Petschek has designed a lovely book full of incredible Bargello patterns in wonderful colors. That pretty much covers all the words of this type I know so....

This is not a book that will teach you Bargello Needlepoint but if you already know your way around, you will find 26 fine patterns to stitch.

Beautiful Bargello is a brand new hard cover book published by Trafalgar Publishing in 1997. It has 144 pages. ISBN # 1-57076-093-4

Selling New Books is very different from selling my used, hard-to-find or rare books. New books have a set retail price and I have to compete in the marketplace.

Sandy's Finishing Touches, Revised 2010 Edition by Sandy Higgins

Sandy's Finishing Touches is out of stock right now but more are on their way. If you want to order one, I will ship the same day I get them.

Sandy's Finishing Touches is subtitled "A Step-By-Step Guide To Finishing Needlework. I thought this might be a great book to have for sale here, since I know I know almost nothing about finishing off the needlepoint I stitch, beyond blocking it.

It seems to me there are less places to have good needlework finished then there used to be, as our LNS close, one by one. I used to have beautiful finishing done by a store near where I live, but the owners retired (go figure).

The new store I took my finishing too did a miserable job, in fact ruining a large round petitpoint pillow I spent many months stitching. Oh well.

This book is by Sandy Higgins, first printed in 1991. This is a brand new, 2010 Revised Sixth Printing. The books appears to be very nicely self published and paper bound in a handy ring binding (always good for cookbooks and instructions books so you can follow the directions page by page).

Someone who bought this book from me, when I first listed it told me this is a very good book, very useful.

The book has 71 pages. The chapters are titled:
<ul>
<li> blocking
<li>pillows
<li>other edge finishes
<li>pillow stuffings and closures
<li>christmas finishing
<li>other needlework projects
<li> special effects
<li> references
</ul>

Another advantage, the type is good size, no need to wear ones *stitching glasses* to read this book.

Self-Published 2010 Revised Edition. Sandy's Finishing Touches is a Mat Cover paperbound book with a spiral binding.

ISBN # 978-0-9663617-1-1

You may see this book sold elsewhere for less money. Check carefully, it is probably the 2003 Fifth Printing, which wholesaled for less.
