Left Handed Stitchery by Sally Cowan

With Illustrations by Kurt Loftus. Left Handed Stitching is a very much overlooked subject in needlework. I know of only one other book on the subject, the New York Times Book of Needlepoint for Left Handers and it is so rare it is difficult to find. It is long out of print.

This is a more concise book, aimed at Embroiders and useful to Cross-Stitchers. There are instructions for 45 stitches using 96 drawings.

In the forward the author, Sally Cowan who is also the author of Left Handed Sewing, says that she has gone beyond the basic sewing stitches in her first book to concentrate on Decorative Stitching for left handers.

As the Daughter and Mother of left handers I can tell you that it can be difficult to be different.

Left Handed Stitchery is a medium size glossy paperbound book. It was published by Schiffler Publishing in 1987 and has 61 pages.

This is a brand new book. ISBN #978-0-88740-110-7

Tassel Making by Anna Crutchley

I love the look of lush tassels on a needlepoint pillow. It always bothered me that I could not have them match my design and colors exactly and that they cost too much.

I had to wait a long time for this book on how to make tassels. it was backordered forever but finally, here it is. The subtitle of this book is "Revealing the Secrets of how to make the world's most gorgeous fabric decorations"

That works for me.

This is a gorgeous book, all the pictures are full color and the examples are wonderful.

Every project has a materials list, complete and clear directions using lots of color pictures. The results are wonderful (I know I am re-using words).

Many of the tassels made in the book require templates, they are all printed in the back of the book for you to cut out and use. There is also a list of suppliers for the items that may not be readily available where you are.

Tassel Making has 90 pages of Tassel Designs to make. It is a large size, new, heavy paperbound book with a total of 160 pages.

Now that I have looked through this book, I am getting a copy for myself, as well.

Published by Southwater, which is a division of Anness Publishing in the UK. First published in 1996, this is the 2004 re-print edition.

ISBN # 1-84215-299-8

New Twists on Needlework Embellishment by Suzanne Howren & Beth Robertson

This book is by the same pair who are responsible for the "Stitches For Effect" trilogy of books. They are clearly experienced needlepointers and needlepoint authors.

This book will take you from the very first steps, how to prepare a canvas for embellishment and which kinds of projects are suitable. It discusses the designs and colors that work best, the padding, applique, Couching, altered threads, beads and using found objects.

This book is completely complete (I really like that phrase, sorry to inflict it on you).

If you want to be really impressed, you should read the Bibliography of books they consulted to write this book, all the best of today's needlepointers and designers.

New Twists on Embellishment is a brand new paperbound book with a spiral binding. I am not positive if the spiral binding is metal or heavy plastic but it is sturdy. It was published by Shear Creations LLC in 2007. ISBN # 978-0-9663924-4

Bead Embroidery: The Complete Guide by Jane Davis

As a stitcher, I am partial to spiral bound books. They stay open on the page you want and lay flat. Even better are hard cover books with a spiral binding inside. Bead Embroidery is that kind of book.

The subtitle is : The Complete Guide and it does seem to be that and then some. There are large sections on how to add beads to Needlepoint Stitches, Embroidery Stitches, RibbonWork etc. Then there are sections on Elements for Flowers, BeadWork Stitches, fringe & Edging.

Bead Embroidery has a basics & tools section, 18 pages of Needlepoint stitches with beads, 9 pages of Cross-Stitch & beads, 5 pages of Insertion Stitches with beads, 5 pages of Hardanger Embroidery with beads, 51 pages of Embroidery stitches with beads, 25 pages of BeadWork Stitches.

Sounds complete to me. There are also 20 Needlework and Bead projects. At the end of the book are many wonderful pictures the author calls "The Artists Gallery".

All the pictures are full color and the stitch diagrams are all 2 or 3 color, making them easy to follow.

This is a brand new medium size book. Published by Krause Publications in 2005. It has 255 pages.

ISBN # 978-0-97349-888-3

Stitch: Landscape by Stacey Tombros & Elaine Oliverio

I have this wonderful book back in stock, for immediate delivery (until I sell out again)

Recently, we have seen the publication of several new books, the first in proposed series of Needlework books. After a few years of almost no new books on this/these subject(s), this is great.

Stacey Tombros & Elaine Oliverio, in Association with Little Shop Canvas Company have just published this new stitch book, Stitch: Landscape.

The list of landscape based stitches on the cover of the book are:
Clouds
Flowers
Grass
Mountains
Sand
Shubbery
Sky
Snow
Soil
Stone
Trees
Water

and there are more inside.

To quote from the first page of the book "Landscape is a term that depicts and covers natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, water etc. It is a portion of land which the eye can comprehend as a single view. Keeping that in mind, Stitch Landscape was created.

Stitching landscapes, choosing stitches and selecting threads can be tricky. Stitch Landscape is a comprehensive stitch book designed with categories of multiple stitches to choose from.

Stitch Hints are provided in each category to optimize stitches and thread choice."

Although this is a small book, there appears to be a large number of stitches in here, 5 or 6 to a page. The diagrams are clear and easy to read and understand.

There are a number of stitches here that are completely new to me (not that I am an expert).

For instance, Grass is difficult to stitch. There are 40 different stitches for grass and at least one page of stitch hints for each category. I am impressed.

This is a brand new book, published in 2011 byLittle Shop Canvas Company. Stitch Landscape is a spiral bound paper cover book with a clear plastic overlay sheet to protect the cover page. It has 75 pages.

This has just been released and NewNeedlepoint is one of the first stores to have it (yes, I am crowing about this).

I usually do not show inside pages on new books but I wanted to show you a few of these stitches.

Sandy's Finishing Touches, Revised 2010 Edition by Sandy Higgins

Sandy's Finishing Touches is out of stock right now but more are on their way. If you want to order one, I will ship the same day I get them.

Sandy's Finishing Touches is subtitled "A Step-By-Step Guide To Finishing Needlework. I thought this might be a great book to have for sale here, since I know I know almost nothing about finishing off the needlepoint I stitch, beyond blocking it.

It seems to me there are less places to have good needlework finished then there used to be, as our LNS close, one by one. I used to have beautiful finishing done by a store near where I live, but the owners retired (go figure).

The new store I took my finishing too did a miserable job, in fact ruining a large round petitpoint pillow I spent many months stitching. Oh well.

This book is by Sandy Higgins, first printed in 1991. This is a brand new, 2010 Revised Sixth Printing. The books appears to be very nicely self published and paper bound in a handy ring binding (always good for cookbooks and instructions books so you can follow the directions page by page).

Someone who bought this book from me, when I first listed it told me this is a very good book, very useful.

The book has 71 pages. The chapters are titled:
<ul>
<li> blocking
<li>pillows
<li>other edge finishes
<li>pillow stuffings and closures
<li>christmas finishing
<li>other needlework projects
<li> special effects
<li> references
</ul>

Another advantage, the type is good size, no need to wear ones *stitching glasses* to read this book.

Self-Published 2010 Revised Edition. Sandy's Finishing Touches is a Mat Cover paperbound book with a spiral binding.

ISBN # 978-0-9663617-1-1

You may see this book sold elsewhere for less money. Check carefully, it is probably the 2003 Fifth Printing, which wholesaled for less.

Beginner's Guide to Silk Shading by Claire Hanham

This is another of the new books where I have kept one for myself. My shading skills are non-existant to negative (as in I do worse than you could imagine).

Although this book's title says it is about "Silk Shading" the techniques here are suitable and highly adaptable to Cotton Embroidery, Crewel Work or Needlepoint.

Silk Shading is aimed at beginners but I do not think it is right for "real"beginners. I suggest this book for mid-level to advanced stitchers.

The books begins with materials, threads & needles. There are chapters on Techniques & How To Start. There are 4 projects with completely complete (my idea of a joke) directions.

This book would be a great help to many stitchers, of every sort. Shading is one of the more difficult things to master, IMO.

A large glossy cover paperbound book with 48 pages. Published by Search Press in UK in 2007. This edition is a 2008 re-print.

ISBN# 978-1-84448-112-5

The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork by Lesley Wilkins

I have always been interested in Blackwork and drawn to it when I see it. So.....I saw this book on the wholesaler's list and thought, why not?

Although the Title of this book is "The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork" this is not a beginners book. I recommend it to mid-level or advanced stitchers

I am quoting from the introduction "Blackwork is a counted thread method of needlework (ok, it said embroidery but I used the word needlework) using straight stitches in a contrasting color worked on even weave fabric (me again, or white & colored canvas).

The book appears to be quite comprehensive, it begins at the very beginning, showing you hw to pick the correct materials, the basic stitches, starting a design etc. and takes you all the way to mounting a finished piece.

There are a number of pages of designs and more pages with lots of "fill-in patterns". The pictures are mostly black & white (and why not, it is blackwork, after all).

The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork is a handsome glossy heavy paperbound book with 64 pages. It was first published by Search Press in Tunbridge Wells, England in 2002. This is the 2008 re-printed edition.

ISBN # 978-0-85532-937-2

Punch Needle:The Complete Guide by Marinda Stewart

This is another of these great spiral bound needlework books inside a hard cover. I think they are great, the pages stays open where you want and they lay flat.

For the author, learning PunchNeedle was an "exercise in suspending
everything I knew about traditional embroidery." She found it to be fun and surprisingly easy.

I have done some PunchNeedle work myself and agree, it is fun and not hard at all.

The author goes on to say "This book contains everything I know how to do with a PunchNeedle. I've tried to answer the questions I've been asked over the years. I've covered threads, yarns & fibers for stitching and dozens of different background fabrics. I have included tips & tricks that will add to your success"

Indeed, PunchNeedle: The complete Guide does seem to be very complete. The chapters range from:
the History of PunchNeedle
General Info
Materials list
Let's Get Started
Size Matters
Special Effects
Finicky Fabrics
Mixed MediaGallery
Trouble Shooting

62 pages of projects

The pictures are all full color.

Punch Needle Rug Hooking by Amy Oxford

The subtitle for Amy Oxford's comprehensive Rug Hooking book is: Techniques and Design.

From the back cover: " Learn to make beautiful punch needle hooked rugs with veteran instructor, Amy Oxford. A complete *how to* photo essay walks you through every stage of rug making"

There are tons of pictures in this book, more then I even expected. The book includes a "gallery" of 140 rugs, pillows, chair pads and stair runners.

Chapter 1 is an overview and history of rug hooking.
Chapter 2 discusses George Wells "the patriarch of rug hooking"
Chapter 3 is McAdoo Rugs
Chapter 4 is A Private Lesson
Chapter 5 is Questions & Answers
Chapter 6 is Punch Needle Profiles

While some of the designs are Folk Art inspired, others are contemporary, quilt pattern or based Oriental rugs.

This book is suitable for a beginner however, an experienced hooker (sorry, I could not resist) will find many ideas and motifs to inspire them.

A gorgeous book with perhaps a few too many pictures of Amy, but she is the author so......

A-Z of Ribbon Embroidery

This is the 6th book (by their own count) of the very successful A-Z series of needlework books. Although the book is essentially about Embroidery, the application of these ideas and techniques to Needlepoint are clear.

I know I have incorporated ribbons and ribbon type threads into some of my own needlepoint projects. The book also shows you how to create textured designs & stitches using ribbon.

There are 40 designs in the book. All with step-by-step photographs to guide you and clear instructions.

A-Z of Ribbon Embroidery does not list an author. The Editor in Chief is Maggie Bauer. It was published by Country Bumpkin Publications in Australia in 2002. It has 132 pages.

The books ISBN number is 0 95 79069 3 5

This is a very nicely made book, it is a spiral bound glossy heavy paperbound book. The Spiral spine is hidden behind a heavy outside cover.

Royal School of Needlework: Blackwork by Becky Hogg

This is from The Royal School of Needlework's Essential Stitch Guides Series. This is nicely done book with everything you need to know about Blackwork included. It is what you would expect from a book sanctioned by The Royal School of Needlework.

After the introduction there is a History of Blackwork, then a section on material, framing and design. There are 10 pages of stitches and each is shown in great detail, with line drawings, full color photographs of the stitch in progress (even if the only color in the picture is the fingers making the stitch) and a photo of the stitch in "use" (in a design).

There are also some things to be learned here besides blackwork. The Sketched Satin Stitch on page 32 plus the chapter on shading would be useful many stitchers.

Then there are 44 pages of patterns and a chapter on Shading and combining the techniques.

I like Blackwork, I like the crisp contrast, the whole idea of it but even so, I think this is a very well done and useful book.

The back of the book has a few pages of amazing finished original design Blackbook stitched canvases. Wonderful!

Here's a tidbit for you. The Royal College of Needlework is based at Hampton Court Palace in London. Blackwork is a small glossy cover hard cover book with a spiral binding. There is no dust jacket.

Published by Search Press in the UK in 2010. The book has 96 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-84448-551-2

Hooking Rugs is not a forgotten art, far from it. This book has many wonderful designs & ideas for rugs in styles ranging from traditional, quilt pattern, floral, animal, abstract and contemporary, all modern, today's hooked rugs.

To quote from the back cover (as usual)
"When the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild puts on a hooked rug exhibition, they pull out all the stops. Widely recognized as the best hooked rug show in the country, "Hooked In The Mountains" showcases the talent of some of the finest artists in the field."

"This armchair version of the exhibit features 600 outstanding full color photographs of rugs that portray a multitude of subjects."

This is not a project book, there are no instructions or patterns. It is an overview of today's best Hooked Rugs. There is a wealth of ideas and inspiration here. A very beautiful book and a lot of fun to look at.

Photographs by Cynthia McAdoo.

Published by Schiffer Books in 2005. Hooked Rugs Today is a glossy cover paper bound book with 190 pages.

This is a brand new book, any signs it has been gently read are from me, I can't resist looking at it (sorry).

Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies in Ribbon Embroidery & Stumpwork by Di van Niekerk

I am at a disadvantage here, I had not previously heard of Cicely Mary Barker's lovely Flower Fairies designs. I had just 1 boy, he is 31 now and was never interested in Fairies (or fashion either).

Di van Niekerk is the author of several other Ribbon Embroidery & Stumpwork books, some of which I list here on NewNeedlepoint.

In her introduction Ms Neikerk writes about these designs
"Cecily Mary Barker was born in Croyden, South London in 1895. She was enrolled at Croyden Art Society at 13 and 2 years later at age 15, her first set of postcards was published.

Her timeless and exquisite Flower Faires brtought her international acclaim as an artist and they are as captivating today as they were in 1923 when they were first published".

From the back cover of the book, I paraphrase:
5 of her beautiful Fairies are translated into Ribbon & Stumpwork Embroideries. With numerous new ideas & tachniques, this book will appeal to both beginners and advanced embroiderers.

East to follow steo-by-step directions show you how to:
embroider the pretty flowers & leaves in Silk and Organza ribbon

Use Organza and silky threads to make the Fairies delicate Stumpwork wings

Make Applique leaves & petals

Create charming Stumpwork Insects

Dress the Fairies in layers of Organza and Embroider their hair

Make the Fairies Clothing using Long & Short Stitch

Create 3 dimensional designs using color, texture & shapes.

The 5 Flower Faires in this book are:
The Periwinkle Fairy
Black Medick Fairies
White Clover Fairy
Stork's Bill Fairy
Red Clover Fairy.

This is a gorgeous book, very special. Despite the back cover comments, this book is not for beginners. It needs a somewhat experienced or advanced stitcher.

There are many, many pictures, all in full color, sometimes as many as 8 on a single page. They show every possible technique you need plus the directions and instructions are complete and detailed.

First published in the UK in 2009, this is the April 2010 re-print edition from Search Press in Tunbridge Wells, England. It is a matte cover paperbound book with 152 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-84448-430-0

Stumpwork Embroidery by Jane Nicholas

Subtitled:
A Collection of Fruits, Flowers and Insects for Contemporary Raised Embroidery.

This is another book by Sally Milner Publishing's excellent Milner Craft Series books from Australia.

Stumpwork Embroidery is different from Dimensional Emjbroidery, it is "more raised" and much lusher (if that makes any sense to you)>

Quoted from the back cover:
"Stumpwork is a style of raised and padded embroidery that has it's origins in the seventeenth century. It incorporates a charming array of motifs-exotic flowers and fruits, insects and animals- all worked as delicate scultural forms."

Stumpwork Embroidery explains how to work this style in a clear and comprehensive manner, discussing all the traditional techniques such as surface stitching, padded applique, needlelace and wired detached embroidered shapes. it provides full instructions and step-by-step illustrations along with fascinating historical tidbits, for working over 40 flowers, fruits and insects. The projects showcase the author's style, which while distinctively her own, remains true to the spirit of the seventeenth century."

In skimming through this book, the directions are indeed clear and easy to understand. The templates, techniques and stitches are all shown in B & W line drawings but there are full color pictures of the projects scattered all through the book, 3 pages at a time.

As always with The Milner Craft Series book, this is a good book and a "class act".

This is a mat cover hard cover book, it does not come with a dust jacket. Published by Sally Milner Publications in 1995, Stumpwork Embroidery has been re-printed twice in 1996, three times in 1997, in 1998, 1999, 2000 (again twice), 2001, 2002 and 2005.

This is the 2005 Edition. Clearly this is a popular book. it has 186 pages a beautiful endpapers.

Cut It Out by Anne Margreet Honing with Pauline Ricard-Andre

Easy Designs for Applique With Attitude.

The cover shows a very modern woman in red 4 inch heels carrying one of their Applique bags while riding a motorcycle (driving it, not behind some guy).

I wish the authors had picked a better looking tote bag Applique design for the cover. This one would not inspire me to open this book.

From the back cover:
"Discover what indie crafters already know-that applique, the simplest of crafts, is the newest way to create one-of-a-kind style. Got a pair of scissors, some fabric scraps and a needle & thread? You're good to go."

"Got something plain that needs a little personality? it's time has come! Let Cut It Out inspire you to turn bags, clothes, curtains and more into fresh works of personal expression. Applique isn't dead-it just needed a little attitude."

Ok, well then. To begin with this book was first published in France (in French) in 2007. The designs in this book are very "young and hip" or maybe I am just too old (that is possible).

There are many ideas here, some of the applique designs contain words or a mixture of words and small motifs.

This is a cheerful book, it contains all full color photos and templates for the motifs used. It has very little directions except in the front of the book where she shows you How To Do It and it is not complicated.

This is not a book for a serious stitcher but if you are looking for some simple and fun needlework, this book has it.

Cut It Out is a mat cover paperbound book. It was published in the USA by Watson-Guptill Publications in 2008. It has 63 pages.

ISBN # 978-0-8230-9841-5

Traditional Designs in Hardanger Embroidery edited by Jules & Kathe Kliot

I have seen Hardanger Embroider mentioned and seen book cover pictures of it but never really have understood what it is. We are going to learn this together as I review this book.

The cover photo is spectacular, if this is Hardanger I am excited already.

There is no text on the back cover of the book, stopping me in my tracks, so to speak. This is from the first page.

"The decoration of the plain woven fabric has always been a fascination to man. One of the earliest techniques was to pierce the fabric with holes, following the warp and weft threads, to create a form of openwork or cutwork. The larger openings were elaborately infilled with needle worked stitches while the smaller openings maintained their integrity as the main design element.

While later forms of cutwork freed the designer from the fabric structure, with designs fluid and independent of any geometric order, it is the structured design of small regular holes that this book focuses on.

Hardanger Embroidery is the specific form of cutwork which relies on the weave of the base fabric in the creation of geometric patterns, with the small square hole the predominant design element. As such it (is) often considered a form of counted thread embroidery, as the design is related to a specific thread count"

"this book is a re-publication of two outstanding manuals:

THE PRISCILLA HARDANGER BOOK. A collection of beautful design in Hardanger Embroidery with lessons and stitches, edited by Nellie Clark Brown and Elma Iona Locke and published by the Prisciall Publishing Co in 1909

and

OLD AND NEW DESIGNS IN HARDANGER EMBROIDERY Book 10 by Sophie T. La Croix, published by St Louis Fancy Work Co in 1910.

Whew, that is a lot of information but none of it quite useful.

I don't know how much Hardanger Embroidery you will learn from this book, it is not like the usual needlework books we have now.

There are basic instructions and some wonderful examples. All the pictures are in B & W (go figure). I think this is an interesting needlework book and wonderful needlework history but for a beginner or novice to learn, I think not.

Published by Lacis Publications in 1992. Traditional Designs in Hardanger Embroidery is a glossy cover paperbound book. It has 80 pages.

ISBN # 0-916896-41-2

PunchNeedle Embroidery Dancing Needles by Pamela Gurney

The PunchNeedle work on the cover of this book is just wonderful. The textures and the 3 dimensional quality of it. I really am impressed.

This is another great book from Sally Milner Publishing's Milner Craft Series from Australia.

To, as usual, quote the back cover of this book:

" This book is intended for the wider audience and seeks to encourage new and more experienced embroiderers to enjoy the dimensional, colorful and exciting pieces that can be created by embroidering with punchneedles."

"With step-by-step instructions and colour photographs for every project, this book has projects suitable for beginners and experienced punchneedle embroiderers. Pamela's easy style will make this a delight for all who wish to create their own punchneedle embroidery pieces from her book."

Well said (except maybe for that last sentence).

The first 66 pages of this book are how-to, what you need and general information. Techniques, advice etc, all you need to know. The next part is the projects and they are all attractive.

The projects are mostly florals, animals or juvenile in feeling. They are all fine and some of them are indeed (to use that too often used word) stunning.

The Promise of Summer project on page 173 is a show-stopper done in ribbon punchneedle.

Published by Sally Milner Publishing in Australia in 2003 and re-printed in 2004 & 2005. This is the 2005 edition.

Dancing Needles is a large glossy cover paperbound book, it has 184 pages.

ISBN # 1-86351-313-2

A-Z of Embroidery Stitches

This book is not exactly the same as the other books in Country Bumpkin's A to Z Needlework books series. The subtitle reads:
"A Complete Manual For The Beginner Through To The Advanced Embroiderer"

" More Than 1300 Step-By-Step Colour Photographs Of Every Stitch You Will Ever Need"

"From the publisher's of Inspirations Magazine."

OK, I have never heard of Inspirations Magazine but that might be because Country Bumpkin publishing is in Australia, where these books are all published.

I do take issue with the claim "every stitch you will ever need" but until I look this book over I have no basis for my issue (as usual).

This copy is a First Edition published in 1997.

They might be right, there are many embroidery stitches in here. Each stitch has a full page of pictures and directions (if not more) with at least 12 full color pictures showing the stitch being formed, indeed step-by-step.

I am impressed. THis book contains some Ribbon Stitching, some Drawn Thread Work and Hem Stitching. Wait till you see the Ribbon Stitch Water Lily on page 106.

A-Z of Embroidery Stitches is a glossy cover paperbound book with a metal spiral binding. The binding is not enclosed in a hard cover as many of the other A-Z books are. The book has 144 pages.

There is no USA ISBN number here, there is not even a USA price, just an Australian and a New Zealand price. I will price ths in line with the other A-Z books.

Color on Color by Janet Haigh

*Elegant Designs to Stitch*. According to the author this is an Embroidery book but it does seem to be much more then that. This book has all kinds of Needlework as well as Embroidery. There is Bargello Needlepoint, Applique, Piecing, Pattern Darning (one I never heard of before), Beading & more.

Color on Color is from Anchor's Simply Stitched Series and it looks terrific.

The theme in this book is color. How it used, how it combines and the effects you can get. Many of the designs are sown drawn in different colorways. it is easy to see the difference color can make.

Color on Color ranges from the basics on Embroidery and choosing materials all the way to a design of all French Knots (hard to do).

There are 12 projects and a large section, at the end, called Useful Information. It has basic Embroidery Techniques,a Stitch Glossary, Assembly Instructions, Motifs, Patterns & Charts and Project Profiles.

I do not know if I should call this book a Color & Color Theory book or not. You decide.

A new Paperbound book, published by Coats Clark UK LTD (the company that makes Anchor threads etc) in 2004.

The book has 112 pages

ISBN # 1-931499-85-3

A - Z of Whitework, Book 1

Another book from the very popular and well done A - Z series of Needlecraft books. This one is subtitled:

Surface Embroidery
The ultimate resource for beginning and experienced needleworkers, with over 1,000 fabulous step-by-step colour photographs, meticulous instructions and tips from experts

(You know I am quoting the above that because they spelled color the classy English way -colour- and used the word Meticulous)

The cover also states "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Whitework.

In skimming through this book, I have to agree. A - Z of Whitework is complete, comprehensive, very well done. it is loaded with photographs but the best one is the inside cover page. Beautiful twin little girls wearing Whitework dresses.

I am an admirer of Whitework, I like the pristine and gleaming look of white on white stitchery.

The Chapters are:

Ayeshire Embroidery with 20 stitches or stitch variations

Broderie Anglaise with 9 stitches or stitch variations

Candlewicking with 17 stitches or stitch variations

Carrickmacross Embroidery with 6 stitches

Cutwork with 15 stitches or stitch variations

Hedebo Embroidery with 5 stitches

Mountmellick Embroidery with 49 stitches and stitch variations. There are 10 variations on The Blanket Stitch and 5 variations on Knitted Fringe Stitches.

Shadow Work 1 stitch

Tambour Embroidery 1 stitch.

The book is not a stitch dictionary, each kind of Whitework and each stitch is shown "at work" in an embroidered piece and described how to use it and it's effect.

Published by Inspiration Books in Australia in 2007. It is edited by Sue Gardner for Country Bumpkin Publications. A - Z Whitework is a glossy cover paperbound book with a spiral binding inside the outside cover.

ISBN # 0-9757094-9-6

Making Rag Rugs edited by Claire Hubbard

Once in a while I get a book that I know is terrific the moment I look at it. This is one of those. The cover is striking and the rugs shown inside this book are fabulous.

Great designs, graphics, colors, all of it. To quote the back cover

"With just a few simple tools and a bag of rags, you can create beautiful handmade rugs to enrich your home decor. Making Rag Rugs offers a modern twist on the traditional techniques of Hooking, Prodding, Clipping and Braiding. Clear step-by-step illustrations make rug making simple for anyone, from beginner to experienced crafter".

Looking through the book, The designs are great, more modern than country. Some have a Swedish Rag Rug feeling, one has an Amish type graphic design, one has flowers. The colors and the concepts are wonderful.

Each Project has a list of what tools and supplies you will need, complete instructions and several full color pictures of of the techniques and details for each rug as well as a full color picture of the finished rug.

The book begins with materials, tools and everything you need to do and know to begin and to finish your rug. There are 15 projects.

For what it's worth, I like this book very much.

This is a glossy cover paperbound book. This North American edition was published by Storey Publishing in 2002. It has 80 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-58017-455-8

The Complete Book of Stumpwork Embroidery by Jane Nicholas

Even before I open it, this is an impressive book. It is big & thick and looks, well, complete.

A (partial) quote from the foreword: "The seventeenth century in England was a most interesting era. It was the age of oak, the panelled rooms had heavy beams and were furnished with deeply carved oak joined chairs, cupboards and tester bedsteads. Fabrics were an important ingredient and inventories are full of references to cushions, screens, wall hangings and bed coverings. Against this background it is not at all strange that a heavy form of embroidery was popular."

"Many examples of this heavy, padded raised embroidery, now known as Stumpwork, have survived in surprisingly good condition>"

The book goes on to say that if you are new to Stumpwork it is important that you read the materials and General Instructions chapters first.

This book is comprehensive and then some, it is almost scholarly. There are few pictures in the book, most illustrations are B & W drawings.

There are several sections of full color pictures throughout the book and the work they show is lovely but to be fair, I have to tell you, this is a very "text heavy" book.

If you are seriously interested in Stumpwork Embroidery or looking to advance your skills, this would be a good book for you but if you are just curious, there are more accessible books out there on this subject

The Complete Book of Stumpwork Embroider is a large hardcover book. It does not have a dust jacket and did not come with one. Published by The Milner Craft Series of Sally Milner Publishing in Australia in 2005 and reprinted in 2006. The book has 396 pages.

From Print to Stitch by Janet Edmonds

This is a unique needlework book, it's subtitle is:
Tips & Techniques For Hand Printing and Stitching on Fabric.

This is something new and I know nothing about it..yet. Let's start with the back cover.

"This unique and colorful book by Janet Edmonds shows you how to add amazing designs to fabric through print and stitch. The book guides you effortlessly through every stage, beginning with the materials and tools you need, how to develop your original ideas into a workable design and how to use color. These are followed by a wide range of hand-printing techniques on different materials and fabrics, all clearly explained and richly illustrated. The book culminates in a extensive stitch gallery showing you how your printed design can be enhanced using a variety of threads, machine stitching, hand embroidery and embellishments".

Well, that is an overview.

Back to the book. There is a note from the publisher on one of the front pages saying that *all the step by step photographs in this book feature the author, Janet Edmonds, demonstrating mixed media craftwork, no models were used*. I can see why they added the note, these designs ad projects are stunning.

The table of contents lists:
Introduction
Materials & Tools
Developing a Theme
Colour

PRINTING
Block Printing
Lino & Soft-Cut Lino Printing
Monoprinting
Using Found Objects

STITCHING
Starting to Stitch
Stitch Gallery
Conclusion
Index

This is an amazing but, I think, complex book. I do not recommend it to beginners but any moderately skilled or advanced stitcher will find this fascinating. A gorgeous, full-color book by a talented fiber artist.

From Print to Stitch is a large hardcover book. Published in the UK by Search Press in 2010, the book has 128 pages.

The Complete Illustrated Stitch Encyclopedia

There are no author or editor names anywhere that I can find on this large book. It was published by Sterling Press in 2004.

The back of the title pages says this book was "based on Needlecraft magie published in 2001 by Eaglemoss Publications.

I have no idea what any of that means.

it is not a stretch to call this book the "complete encyclopedia". It is a large heavy book with 318 pages. All the pictures, graphs and stitch samples are in color.

The book claims to have 250 Needlepoint & embroidery (often interchangable) stitches and 30 projects to use them in. The book calls itself "An Invaluable One-Volume Resource for Needleworkers".

This is a brand new, large glossy paperbound book. ISBN: 0-49725-51380-8

Shay Pendray's Inventive Needlework

Subtitled: Technique and Inspiration for Gold Work, Painted Canvas and Shading.

This appears to be an interesting book, The painted Canvas (Needlepoint) section covers everything you need to know to achieve wonderful effects on Needlepoint Canvaas. The Gold Work section, for lack of a better way to say it, Glitters and the shading instruction is quite good. There are no actual projects, just page after page of instruction, advice and help.

There is a gallery of gorgeous pictures in the back of the book.

Shay Pendray is one of the better known "names" in Needlework today. Her book is suitable for needleworkers of all skill levels. A quote from Inventive Needlework's back cover "reference that combines illustrations and full-color photographs to demonstrate each technique."

I guarantee that no matter how skilled a stitcher you are, you will learn from from this book. Although the books gives some beginner instruction, it probably is too advanced for an absolute beginning stitcher to use...yet anyway.

Published by Krause Publications in Iola, WI in 2004. This is a new, large glossy cover paperbound book with 142 pages.

Terrific Tassels & Fabulous Fringe by Cari Clement

I am very fond of alliteration, I suspect that is part of my overall strangeness but I love this title, plus the author's name with 2 Cs. I know this has no bearing on the review but there you are.

The subtitle for this book is " Heirloom Accents from Modern Materials".

To quote the back cover "Why pay high prices for ready-made when you can make your own easily and inexpensively?" Why indeed.

The book has 40 Tassel & Fringe making projects, using readily available materials & tools..

The book also suggests ways to use these embellishments in your decor. Just skimming through the book I found many ways these might be used on our needlework, as well.

Each project has Step-by-Step Directions
Inexpensive Materials & Tools lists
Elegant Applications Chapter.

In looking at the chapters page, Terrific Tassels & Fabulous Fringe looks to be a "soup-to-Nuts" book,, very complete and comprehensive.

A large glossy cover paperbound book with 128 pages. Published by Krause Publications in Iola, WI in 2000.

Contemporary WhiteWork by Tracy Franklin & Nicola Jarvis

This is a wonderful book full of unusual and amazing ideas. I love white anyway but the concept and execution of WhiteWork as shown in this book is excellent.

Many of the ideas and concepts used here are adaptable to Needlepoint as Well, Some of them practically scream "Needlepoint".

From the dust jacket flaps "The term *WhiteWork* covers a range of traditional and much loved hand Embroidery techniques including Broderie Anglaise, Cutwork, Pulled Work, Shadow Work and Montmellick.

Contemporary or Modern WhiteWork is an overlooked subject. Most books on this subject take a very time honored and traditional approach.

This books shows how this type of stithery can be modern and even cutting edge. Each chapter discusses a different type of WhiteWork stitching.

There is the beginner's section with basic instructions, tools and materials etc.

Each section covers the stitches used in that type of WhiteWork with complete directions, supplies needed and a section of stitches used.

The book is full of illustrations, most of them in full color. B&W drawings are used to stitch diagrams or drawings.

The contents and projects here are unique, you will not see this stuff in every other WhiteWork book, old or new.

This is a new, large hardcover book. Published by Batsford LTD in the UK in 2005. The book has 128 pages.

ISBN # 0-7134-8964-2

Embroidery Techniques Using Space Dyed Threads by Via Laurie

Along the top of the cover of this book is a band with different kinds of Embroidery listed. They include:
GoldWork
StumpWork
Ribbon Embroidery
Jacobean Style
Canvas Work (needlepoint)
Blackwork
Hardanger
Casalguidi
Crazy PatchWork.

The only name on the list I am unfamiliar with is Casalguidi.

From the back cover of the book " Space-Dyed threads offer exciting design possibilities with their beautiful, subtle color changes.

It goes on to say that this book contains many illustrations, all in full color, of "Stunning Projects" (their words) and 10 traditional Embroidery Techniques (must the the names on the cover).

Embroidery Techniques Using Space Dyed Threads includes Templates & Diagrams for each project and a comprehensive stitch Gallery.

In looking through the book the projects are indeed womderful. A few of them are easily adaptab;le to Cross-Stitch as well.

All That Glitters by Alison Cole

This handsome new book takes you from beginning to stitch with Gold or Metallic threads all the way to completed projects. The techniques are somewhat different from stitching with cotton, linen, rayon etc. Unique to metallics alone.

The subtitle is: Projects featuring the techniques of Goldwork and Stumpwork. Although the book focuses on Goldwork etc, this information applies to stitching with Colored Metallics as well.

The book begins with a chapter on basic supplies & requirements, There is a comprehensive 2 page full color layout showing you which thread is which, I think that would be very valuable. Sometimes the differences , while they matter, are hard to see in threads.

The book goes into stitching and the necessary techniques for this medium. Couching is discussed. There is a small section on special stitches and then 10 gorgeous projects.

It ends with a bibliography of additional reading on this subject, if you are so inclined (I have wanted to write that phrase for a long time).

Published by Search Press in England in 2008. This book was originally self-published by Alison Cole in Australia in 2006. It is a brand new glossy paperbound book with 136 pages. ISBN # 978-1-84448-313-6

A-Z of Thread Painting Book

Another fine book from the A-Z Series of needleworks books. It is edited by Sue Gardner.

I am not familiar with Thread Painting, I assume it is similar to "NeedlePainting" but I do not know that for a fact yet. According to the back cover blurb for this book "The art of painting with a needle is one of the most revered form of embroidery, but one that is within reach of every embroiderer." It goes on to call the book "An essential guide for Needleworkers everywhere" Then again, what else is the back cover going to say?

In looking through this book I see there is a section of basics on suitable threads & fabrics. A section of stitches with a focus on the long & short stitch and shading. Long & Short stitch & shading are subjects I know I need to work on. Perhaps you do too.

There are 12 projects in the Animals & Birds chapter
14 in the Flowers & Fruit chapter

There are 20 pages of patterns. These are line drawn designs to be transferred to fabric (or canvas).

These designs and techniques can be easily adapted to Needlepoint or used as discussed in this book. This does seem to be a comprehensive book. And yes, Thread Painting is very much like NeedlePainting. This is a very nice book.

A-Z of Thread Painting is a brand new book published by Inspiration Press in Australia in 2005. It is a glossy heavy paperbound book with a spiral binding hidden inside the cover of the book. It has 128 pages. ISBN #0-9750920-4-9

Needlecraft: Skills & Techniques by Lucinda Ganderton

Lucinda Ganderton is the author of the classic stitch book Stitch Sampler. Stitch Sampler sold well here on NewNeedlepoint as a hard to find book and now it has been re-issued in a new edition (which I list here).

Needlecraft: Skills & Techniques is part of the Practical Home Handbook series.

Quoting from the back cover;
"Over 500 instructional illustrations-both step by step to show you how and glorious inspirational galleries of the best current & traditional Pieces

" Equipment, tools & materials all fully described and explained-how to choose them and how to use them

"Learn how to master the traditional crafts with ease and how to adapt classic approaches and designs for modern equipment and contemporary projects"

"The primary teaching manual for all new needlecrafters and a standard reference work for advanced practitioners"

I think that last sentence says it all. This book is full of tips and techniques, in skimming through it I learned a few thgings I did not know.

THis would be an essentail book for beginners and useful to use veteren stitchers, as well. Packed with full color pictures and with Lucinda Ganderton's needlework knowledge
