<title>Left Handed Stitchery by Sally Cowan</title>
<description>With Illustrations by Kurt Loftus. Left Handed Stitching is a very much overlooked subject in needlework. I know of only one other book on the subject, the New York Times Book of Needlepoint for Left Handers and it is so rare it is difficult to find. It is long out of print.

This is a more concise book, aimed at Embroiders and useful to Cross-Stitchers. There are instructions for 45 stitches using 96 drawings.

In the forward the author, Sally Cowan who is also the author of Left Handed Sewing, says that she has gone beyond the basic sewing stitches in her first book to concentrate on Decorative Stitching for left handers.

As the Daughter and Mother of left handers I can tell you that it can be difficult to be different.

Left Handed Stitchery is a medium size glossy paperbound book. It was published by Schiffler Publishing in 1987 and has 61 pages.

This is a brand new book. ISBN #978-0-88740-110-7

Selling New Books is very different from selling my used, hard-to-find or rare books. New books have a set retail price and I have to compete in the marketplace.

NewNeedlepoint.com will be charging the full retail price for these fine new books but I will mail them for free. Please consider the Free Shipping as a Discount.

<title>TNNA's How to Embroider including How to Cross-Stitch</title>
<description>Another basic and very helpful book from The National NeedleArts Association's Needlecraft Resource Library. This is the Revised Edition.

It is really a large booklet, packed with the essential things you need to know to begin Embroidery or Cross Stitch.

The inside back cover of the books says "This book is intended to get you started enjoying embroidery."

I think that says it all. This is an absolute beginner's book and very accessible and easy to understand for someone who has not stitched before.

This is large glossy cover pamphlet or booklet first published by the TNNA in 1990 and revised and re-released in 2002. It has 38 pages.

ISBN # 8-20638-01042-0 (I think)

<title>Create Your Home in Counted Thread by Mary Jenkins</title>
<description>Below the title on the cover are listed :
Diagonal Stitches
Cross Stitches
Straight Stitches
Decorative Stitches

Counted thread work is suitable to Needlepoint, Embroidery and Cross Stitch fabrics. I like the freedom Counted Thread gives you in terms of design, details &amp; color.

From the back cover of the book : "Create beautiful samplers inspired by the subjects closest to your heart- your own home and garden."

Further down the back cover it describes the book's contents
" A wide selection of houses ready-charted with advice on how to chart your own
Instructions on how to add a garden and even pets to your sampler
A unique opportunity to use traditional stitches in a new &amp; creative way
Easy-to-Follow charts, stitch diagrams and colour photographs throughout"

In paging through this book, I am impressed. The examples are wonderful. Not impossibly complex or overdone, just very good. The instructions and advice is excellent. There are pages of sample windows, doors, animals, shrubs &amp; trees.

There is a section with very good diagrams of stitches. The only downside I can see (or imagine) with this book is that it was published in the UK so most of the houses are homes you might find there, not here in the USA.

Then again, many home styles are universal.

An amazing book.

First published in the UK as House &amp; Garden Samplers in 1996. Retitled and published as a paperbound book by David &amp; Charles in 2005.

Create Your Home In Counted Thread is a glossy cover paperbound book. It has 119 pages.

<title>Bead Embroidery: The Complete Guide by Jane Davis</title>
<description>As a stitcher, I am partial to spiral bound books. They stay open on the page you want and lay flat. Even better are hard cover books with a spiral binding inside. Bead Embroidery is that kind of book.

The subtitle is : The Complete Guide and it does seem to be that and then some. There are large sections on how to add beads to Needlepoint Stitches, Embroidery Stitches, RibbonWork etc. Then there are sections on Elements for Flowers, BeadWork Stitches, fringe &amp; Edging.

Bead Embroidery has a basics &amp; tools section, 18 pages of Needlepoint stitches with beads, 9 pages of Cross-Stitch &amp; beads, 5 pages of Insertion Stitches with beads, 5 pages of Hardanger Embroidery with beads, 51 pages of Embroidery stitches with beads, 25 pages of BeadWork Stitches.

Sounds complete to me. There are also 20 Needlework and Bead projects. At the end of the book are many wonderful pictures the author calls "The Artists Gallery".

All the pictures are full color and the stitch diagrams are all 2 or 3 color, making them easy to follow.

This is a brand new medium size book. Published by Krause Publications in 2005. It has 255 pages.

ISBN # 978-0-97349-888-3

<title>Stitch: Landscape by Stacey Tombros &amp; Elaine Oliverio</title>
<description>I have this wonderful book back in stock, for immediate delivery (until I sell out again)

Recently, we have seen the publication of several new books, the first in proposed series of Needlework books. After a few years of almost no new books on this/these subject(s), this is great.

Stacey Tombros &amp; Elaine Oliverio, in Association with Little Shop Canvas Company have just published this new stitch book, Stitch: Landscape.

The list of landscape based stitches on the cover of the book are:
Clouds
Flowers
Grass
Mountains
Sand
Shubbery
Sky
Snow
Soil
Stone
Trees
Water

and there are more inside.

To quote from the first page of the book "Landscape is a term that depicts and covers natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, water etc. It is a portion of land which the eye can comprehend as a single view. Keeping that in mind, Stitch Landscape was created.

Stitching landscapes, choosing stitches and selecting threads can be tricky. Stitch Landscape is a comprehensive stitch book designed with categories of multiple stitches to choose from.

Stitch Hints are provided in each category to optimize stitches and thread choice."

Although this is a small book, there appears to be a large number of stitches in here, 5 or 6 to a page. The diagrams are clear and easy to read and understand.

There are a number of stitches here that are completely new to me (not that I am an expert).

For instance, Grass is difficult to stitch. There are 40 different stitches for grass and at least one page of stitch hints for each category. I am impressed.

This is a brand new book, published in 2011 byLittle Shop Canvas Company. Stitch Landscape is a spiral bound paper cover book with a clear plastic overlay sheet to protect the cover page. It has 75 pages.

This has just been released and NewNeedlepoint is one of the first stores to have it (yes, I am crowing about this).

I usually do not show inside pages on new books but I wanted to show you a few of these stitches.

<title>Beginner's Guide to Silk Shading by Claire Hanham</title>
<description>This is another of the new books where I have kept one for myself. My shading skills are non-existant to negative (as in I do worse than you could imagine).

Although this book's title says it is about "Silk Shading" the techniques here are suitable and highly adaptable to Cotton Embroidery, Crewel Work or Needlepoint.

Silk Shading is aimed at beginners but I do not think it is right for "real"beginners. I suggest this book for mid-level to advanced stitchers.

The books begins with materials, threads &amp; needles. There are chapters on Techniques &amp; How To Start. There are 4 projects with completely complete (my idea of a joke) directions.

This book would be a great help to many stitchers, of every sort. Shading is one of the more difficult things to master, IMO.

A large glossy cover paperbound book with 48 pages. Published by Search Press in UK in 2007. This edition is a 2008 re-print.

ISBN# 978-1-84448-112-5

<title>Beginner's Guide to Drawn Thread Embroidery by Patricia Bage</title>
<description>I like Beginner's books. I think that they make the sometimes confusing or overwhelming world of Needlework more accessible and easier to learn.

Then again, this "beginners" book is not really for needlework beginners. The Introduction to Drawn Thread Embroider is a moderate t very advanced stitcher's book.

To quote the back cover (as usual) "In this beautiful and inspiring book, Patricia Bage uses clear step-by step instructions, photographs and diagrams to explain how to create exquisite drawn thread embroideries that combine traditional techniques with contemporary threads, colours and embellishments".

I agree with this description of the book, after thumbing through it. The book does indeed begin at the very beginning. It discusses materials, things you need to know before you stitch, drawn thread techniques and beadwork.

There are 10 pages of embroidery stitches, 2 stitches to a page and very clearly diagrammed. Then 4 lovely projects.

This is a nice book and that is said in the best possible way.

Published by Search Press in the UK in 2007, this is the 2009 re-print. The Beginner's Guide to Drawn Thread Embroidery is a glossy cover paperbound book with 64 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-84448-242-9

<title>The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork by Lesley Wilkins</title>
<description>I have always been interested in Blackwork and drawn to it when I see it. So.....I saw this book on the wholesaler's list and thought, why not?

Although the Title of this book is "The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork" this is not a beginners book. I recommend it to mid-level or advanced stitchers

I am quoting from the introduction "Blackwork is a counted thread method of needlework (ok, it said embroidery but I used the word needlework) using straight stitches in a contrasting color worked on even weave fabric (me again, or white &amp; colored canvas).

The book appears to be quite comprehensive, it begins at the very beginning, showing you hw to pick the correct materials, the basic stitches, starting a design etc. and takes you all the way to mounting a finished piece.

There are a number of pages of designs and more pages with lots of "fill-in patterns". The pictures are mostly black &amp; white (and why not, it is blackwork, after all).

The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork is a handsome glossy heavy paperbound book with 64 pages. It was first published by Search Press in Tunbridge Wells, England in 2002. This is the 2008 re-printed edition.

ISBN # 978-0-85532-937-2

	<title>A-Z of Ribbon Embroidery</title>
<description>This is the 6th book (by their own count) of the very successful A-Z series of needlework books. Although the book is essentially about Embroidery, the application of these ideas and techniques to Needlepoint are clear.

I know I have incorporated ribbons and ribbon type threads into some of my own needlepoint projects. The book also shows you how to create textured designs &amp; stitches using ribbon.

There are 40 designs in the book. All with step-by-step photographs to guide you and clear instructions.

A-Z of Ribbon Embroidery does not list an author. The Editor in Chief is Maggie Bauer. It was published by Country Bumpkin Publications in Australia in 2002. It has 132 pages.

The books ISBN number is 0 95 79069 3 5

This is a very nicely made book, it is a spiral bound glossy heavy paperbound book. The Spiral spine is hidden behind a heavy outside cover.

<title>Royal School of Needlework: Blackwork by Becky Hogg</title>
<description>This is from The Royal School of Needlework's Essential Stitch Guides Series. This is nicely done book with everything you need to know about Blackwork included. It is what you would expect from a book sanctioned by The Royal School of Needlework.

After the introduction there is a History of Blackwork, then a section on material, framing and design. There are 10 pages of stitches and each is shown in great detail, with line drawings, full color photographs of the stitch in progress (even if the only color in the picture is the fingers making the stitch) and a photo of the stitch in "use" (in a design).

There are also some things to be learned here besides blackwork. The Sketched Satin Stitch on page 32 plus the chapter on shading would be useful many stitchers.

Then there are 44 pages of patterns and a chapter on Shading and combining the techniques.

I like Blackwork, I like the crisp contrast, the whole idea of it but even so, I think this is a very well done and useful book.

The back of the book has a few pages of amazing finished original design Blackbook stitched canvases. Wonderful!

Here's a tidbit for you. The Royal College of Needlework is based at Hampton Court Palace in London. Blackwork is a small glossy cover hard cover book with a spiral binding. There is no dust jacket.

Published by Search Press in the UK in 2010. The book has 96 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-84448-551-2

	<title>Embroidered Books by Isobel Hall</title>
	<description>Subtitled Design, Construction and Embellishment.

I love books, I am a reader and while I appreciate the ease with which I download &amp; read books on my iPad, I still love the look and feel of real books.

Quoting from the back cover:
"Create precious embroidered books using all the latest fabrics and methods"

"This beautiful book contains over 30 innovative projects and techniques"

"Covers the basics of book construction as well as exquisite embellishment ideas"

"Illustrated throughout with stunning examples of the author's work."

Ok, there are enough overblown words there to make me delve inside and check this book out carefully.

While I reserve the word "stunning" for just a few of these, the hand made &amp; decorated books in this book are indeed wonderful. There are all sorts of effects and materials used, none of them impossible to get.

The book begins with the basics of book construction, then it goes into various ways to structure the book and embellish it. There are box books, wallet fold books" and more.

The techniques go from Plaster of Paris, to printing on copper foil, to molding paste, to marbling to dyes and on.

The books you made would be excellent gifts and anyone into scrapbooking or picture albums would love these ideas.

The directions seem complete and all the pictures, with the exception of line drawings of structure etc, are in full color. A fine book about making books.

Published by Batsford (I should have known from the quality of this book) in the UK in 2009. Embroidered Books is a hard cover book with 128 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-906388-13-3

<title>Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies in Ribbon Embroidery &amp; Stumpwork by Di van Niekerk</title>
<description>I am at a disadvantage here, I had not previously heard of Cicely Mary Barker's lovely Flower Fairies designs. I had just 1 boy, he is 31 now and was never interested in Fairies (or fashion either).

Di van Niekerk is the author of several other Ribbon Embroidery &amp; Stumpwork books, some of which I list here on NewNeedlepoint.

In her introduction Ms Neikerk writes about these designs
"Cecily Mary Barker was born in Croyden, South London in 1895. She was enrolled at Croyden Art Society at 13 and 2 years later at age 15, her first set of postcards was published.

Her timeless and exquisite Flower Faires brtought her international acclaim as an artist and they are as captivating today as they were in 1923 when they were first published".

From the back cover of the book, I paraphrase:
5 of her beautiful Fairies are translated into Ribbon &amp; Stumpwork Embroideries. With numerous new ideas &amp; tachniques, this book will appeal to both beginners and advanced embroiderers.

East to follow steo-by-step directions show you how to:
embroider the pretty flowers &amp; leaves in Silk and Organza ribbon

Use Organza and silky threads to make the Fairies delicate Stumpwork wings

Make Applique leaves &amp; petals

Create charming Stumpwork Insects

Dress the Fairies in layers of Organza and Embroider their hair

Make the Fairies Clothing using Long &amp; Short Stitch

Create 3 dimensional designs using color, texture &amp; shapes.

The 5 Flower Faires in this book are:
The Periwinkle Fairy
Black Medick Fairies
White Clover Fairy
Stork's Bill Fairy
Red Clover Fairy.

This is a gorgeous book, very special. Despite the back cover comments, this book is not for beginners. It needs a somewhat experienced or advanced stitcher.

There are many, many pictures, all in full color, sometimes as many as 8 on a single page. They show every possible technique you need plus the directions and instructions are complete and detailed.

First published in the UK in 2009, this is the April 2010 re-print edition from Search Press in Tunbridge Wells, England. It is a matte cover paperbound book with 152 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-84448-430-0

	<title>Redoute's Finest Flowers in Embroidery</title>
<description>The author of Long and Short Stitch Embroidery, Trish Burr is the author of this book too.

I have to tell you now,(sort of a disclaimer) that I love Pierre Redoute flowers.

This book almost seems to be a follow-up to her Long &amp; Short Stitch book. All of the flowers here are stitching using these stitches.

There are Materials &amp; Beginner chapters, a section oin Techniques.

Redoute's Finest Flowers has 15 pages of stitches with an emphasis on L&amp;S stitch. There are 17 projects with very comlete directions, a template of each and a color key using DMC threads.

The designs and instruction in the book are also suitable for needlepointers.

It would be easy to adapt this for Needlepoint Stitchers.

This is a gorgeous book, all the pictures are in full color, there is a detailed close-up of each flower.

A new glossy paperbound book from the Milner Craft Series. Published by Sally Milner Publishing in Binda, Australia in 2001. This book is from the second printing. It has 95 pages.

	<title>Stumpwork Embroidery by Jane Nicholas</title>
	<description>Subtitled:
A Collection of Fruits, Flowers and Insects for Contemporary Raised Embroidery.

This is another book by Sally Milner Publishing's excellent Milner Craft Series books from Australia.

Stumpwork Embroidery is different from Dimensional Emjbroidery, it is "more raised" and much lusher (if that makes any sense to you)&gt;

Quoted from the back cover:
"Stumpwork is a style of raised and padded embroidery that has it's origins in the seventeenth century. It incorporates a charming array of motifs-exotic flowers and fruits, insects and animals- all worked as delicate scultural forms."

Stumpwork Embroidery explains how to work this style in a clear and comprehensive manner, discussing all the traditional techniques such as surface stitching, padded applique, needlelace and wired detached embroidered shapes. it provides full instructions and step-by-step illustrations along with fascinating historical tidbits, for working over 40 flowers, fruits and insects. The projects showcase the author's style, which while distinctively her own, remains true to the spirit of the seventeenth century."

In skimming through this book, the directions are indeed clear and easy to understand. The templates, techniques and stitches are all shown in B &amp; W line drawings but there are full color pictures of the projects scattered all through the book, 3 pages at a time.

As always with The Milner Craft Series book, this is a good book and a "class act".

This is a mat cover hard cover book, it does not come with a dust jacket. Published by Sally Milner Publications in 1995, Stumpwork Embroidery has been re-printed twice in 1996, three times in 1997, in 1998, 1999, 2000 (again twice), 2001, 2002 and 2005.

This is the 2005 Edition. Clearly this is a popular book. it has 186 pages a beautiful endpapers.

<title>Traditional Designs in Hardanger Embroidery edited by Jules &amp; Kathe Kliot</title>
<description>I have seen Hardanger Embroider mentioned and seen book cover pictures of it but never really have understood what it is. We are going to learn this together as I review this book.

The cover photo is spectacular, if this is Hardanger I am excited already.

There is no text on the back cover of the book, stopping me in my tracks, so to speak. This is from the first page.

"The decoration of the plain woven fabric has always been a fascination to man. One of the earliest techniques was to pierce the fabric with holes, following the warp and weft threads, to create a form of openwork or cutwork. The larger openings were elaborately infilled with needle worked stitches while the smaller openings maintained their integrity as the main design element.

While later forms of cutwork freed the designer from the fabric structure, with designs fluid and independent of any geometric order, it is the structured design of small regular holes that this book focuses on.

Hardanger Embroidery is the specific form of cutwork which relies on the weave of the base fabric in the creation of geometric patterns, with the small square hole the predominant design element. As such it (is) often considered a form of counted thread embroidery, as the design is related to a specific thread count"

"this book is a re-publication of two outstanding manuals:

THE PRISCILLA HARDANGER BOOK. A collection of beautful design in Hardanger Embroidery with lessons and stitches, edited by Nellie Clark Brown and Elma Iona Locke and published by the Prisciall Publishing Co in 1909

and

OLD AND NEW DESIGNS IN HARDANGER EMBROIDERY Book 10 by Sophie T. La Croix, published by St Louis Fancy Work Co in 1910.

Whew, that is a lot of information but none of it quite useful.

I don't know how much Hardanger Embroidery you will learn from this book, it is not like the usual needlework books we have now.

There are basic instructions and some wonderful examples. All the pictures are in B &amp; W (go figure). I think this is an interesting needlework book and wonderful needlework history but for a beginner or novice to learn, I think not.

Published by Lacis Publications in 1992. Traditional Designs in Hardanger Embroidery is a glossy cover paperbound book. It has 80 pages.

ISBN # 0-916896-41-2

<title>PunchNeedle Embroidery Dancing Needles by Pamela Gurney</title>
<description>The PunchNeedle work on the cover of this book is just wonderful. The textures and the 3 dimensional quality of it. I really am impressed.

This is another great book from Sally Milner Publishing's Milner Craft Series from Australia.

To, as usual, quote the back cover of this book:

" This book is intended for the wider audience and seeks to encourage new and more experienced embroiderers to enjoy the dimensional, colorful and exciting pieces that can be created by embroidering with punchneedles."

"With step-by-step instructions and colour photographs for every project, this book has projects suitable for beginners and experienced punchneedle embroiderers. Pamela's easy style will make this a delight for all who wish to create their own punchneedle embroidery pieces from her book."

Well said (except maybe for that last sentence).

The first 66 pages of this book are how-to, what you need and general information. Techniques, advice etc, all you need to know. The next part is the projects and they are all attractive.

The projects are mostly florals, animals or juvenile in feeling. They are all fine and some of them are indeed (to use that too often used word) stunning.

The Promise of Summer project on page 173 is a show-stopper done in ribbon punchneedle.

Published by Sally Milner Publishing in Australia in 2003 and re-printed in 2004 &amp; 2005. This is the 2005 edition.

Dancing Needles is a large glossy cover paperbound book, it has 184 pages.

	<title>Embroidery Techniques &amp; Patterns by Marie-Noelle Bayard</title>
<description>From the back cover " All the classic and popular embroidery stitches are fully explained and pictured in these pages. By completing a series of lovely projects, including a bolster, tea towel and evening bag, you'll learn how to create a wealth of embroidered designs".

In paging through this handsome book I am impressed. All the pictures, even the stitch pictures, are in full color. The designs are traditional but modern, no stogy "old lady embroidery" here and her color use is wonderful.

The evening bag, in particular, is a beautiful design and a bag I would actually carry.

The directions are clear and step-by-step, literally. I think this book would be perfect for a beginner or novice embroiderer and of use to an advanced stitcher as well.

Translated from the French by Kim Allen Gleed, Embroidery Techniques and Patterns was published by Sterling Publishing in 2005. It is a large glossy cover book with no dust jacket. It has 256 Pages.

<title>Color on Color by Janet Haigh</title>
<description>*Elegant Designs to Stitch*. According to the author this is an Embroidery book but it does seem to be much more then that. This book has all kinds of Needlework as well as Embroidery. There is Bargello Needlepoint, Applique, Piecing, Pattern Darning (one I never heard of before), Beading &amp; more.

Color on Color is from Anchor's Simply Stitched Series and it looks terrific.

The theme in this book is color. How it used, how it combines and the effects you can get. Many of the designs are sown drawn in different colorways. it is easy to see the difference color can make.

Color on Color ranges from the basics on Embroidery and choosing materials all the way to a design of all French Knots (hard to do).

There are 12 projects and a large section, at the end, called Useful Information. It has basic Embroidery Techniques,a Stitch Glossary, Assembly Instructions, Motifs, Patterns &amp; Charts and Project Profiles.

I do not know if I should call this book a Color &amp; Color Theory book or not. You decide.

A new Paperbound book, published by Coats Clark UK LTD (the company that makes Anchor threads etc) in 2004.

The book has 112 pages

<title>Creative Recycling in Embroidery by Val Holmes</title>
<description>When I ordered this book, I did not realize that the "ornaments" on the cover's embroidery were can pop top rings. I have to admit I was a bit taken back when I saw the book. Still, this might be an interesting book.

To quote the back cover (as usual)
"Recycle everyday items to create beautiful and unique textile pieces, from bags, bowls and vessels to simple wall hangings"

"packed with ideas for plundering a range f salvaged materials, from spare fibers, fabrics and embroidery to paper, plastic wood &amp; metal"

"Simple instructions appear alongside stunning and inspiring work by highly acclaimed textile artist, Val Holmes and other contemporary artitss"

There are indeed some very interesting and unusual items in this book. I would agree with unique description.

Each project has concise instructions and all the pictures are full color.

I admit, some of this is beyond me, in terms of taste, but I do not want to dump on this book. it is what the author says it is and the color use is glorious. I will even go so far as to say some of the designs are stunning.

After all, I have never seen an even slighty bad Batsford needlework book.

	<title>Traditional Japanese Embroidery by Julia D Gray</title>
<description>This is a nice book, there are many, many pictures showing you the how to do of Japanese Embroidery step by step. Literally step by step in good size pictures.

All the pictures are in color.

The book takes you through the very first steps all the way to finishing. My only complaint (and it is a small one) is that there is a lot of Julia D Gray in this, lots of pictures of her hands (I would have polished my nails for the pictures)

This book was previously published as: The Beginner's Guide to Traditional Japanese Embroidery in 2001.

It is a spiral bound book inside a hard cover (always good) published by Search Press in Tunbridge Wells, UK in 2009. The book has 95 pages.

	<title>The Complete Illustrated Stitch Encyclopedia</title>
<description>There are no author or editor names anywhere that I can find on this large book. It was published by Sterling Press in 2004.

The back of the title pages says this book was "based on Needlecraft magie published in 2001 by Eaglemoss Publications.

I have no idea what any of that means.

it is not a stretch to call this book the "complete encyclopedia". It is a large heavy book with 318 pages. All the pictures, graphs and stitch samples are in color.

The book claims to have 250 Needlepoint &amp; embroidery (often interchangable) stitches and 30 projects to use them in. The book calls itself "An Invaluable One-Volume Resource for Needleworkers".

	<title>Shay Pendray's Inventive Needlework</title>
<description>Subtitled: Technique and Inspiration for Gold Work, Painted Canvas and Shading.

This appears to be an interesting book, The painted Canvas (Needlepoint) section covers everything you need to know to achieve wonderful effects on Needlepoint Canvaas. The Gold Work section, for lack of a better way to say it, Glitters and the shading instruction is quite good. There are no actual projects, just page after page of instruction, advice and help.

There is a gallery of gorgeous pictures in the back of the book.

Shay Pendray is one of the better known "names" in Needlework today. Her book is suitable for needleworkers of all skill levels. A quote from Inventive Needlework's back cover "reference that combines illustrations and full-color photographs to demonstrate each technique."

I guarantee that no matter how skilled a stitcher you are, you will learn from from this book. Although the books gives some beginner instruction, it probably is too advanced for an absolute beginning stitcher to use...yet anyway.

Published by Krause Publications in Iola, WI in 2004. This is a new, large glossy cover paperbound book with 142 pages.

<title>Contemporary WhiteWork by Tracy Franklin &amp; Nicola Jarvis</title>
<description>This is a wonderful book full of unusual and amazing ideas. I love white anyway but the concept and execution of WhiteWork as shown in this book is excellent.

Many of the ideas and concepts used here are adaptable to Needlepoint as Well, Some of them practically scream "Needlepoint".

From the dust jacket flaps "The term *WhiteWork* covers a range of traditional and much loved hand Embroidery techniques including Broderie Anglaise, Cutwork, Pulled Work, Shadow Work and Montmellick.

Contemporary or Modern WhiteWork is an overlooked subject. Most books on this subject take a very time honored and traditional approach.

This books shows how this type of stithery can be modern and even cutting edge. Each chapter discusses a different type of WhiteWork stitching.

There is the beginner's section with basic instructions, tools and materials etc.

Each section covers the stitches used in that type of WhiteWork with complete directions, supplies needed and a section of stitches used.

The book is full of illustrations, most of them in full color. B&amp;W drawings are used to stitch diagrams or drawings.

The contents and projects here are unique, you will not see this stuff in every other WhiteWork book, old or new.

This is a new, large hardcover book. Published by Batsford LTD in the UK in 2005. The book has 128 pages.

ISBN # 0-7134-8964-2

<title>Easy Embroidery on Paper by Joke De Vette</title>
<description>So many holiday things are mass produced, sometimes I think that is not what "giving" is about. I had the idea that Stitched Cards on paper would be a very nice idea for holiday cards, for the special people in your life.

I did some research about embroidery (or needlepoint, it is really the same thing, stitching on paper) and the name that kept popping up was Joke De Vette. Unfortunately most of Joke De Vette's books are out of print.

I did find this one, however. IN reading the general directions, there is not much that you need for this that you do not already have. You will need a "pricking mat". I think that would be any surface that can withstand repeating small holes.

I am going to use my Blocking Board, it will be perfect for this. Then you need some very fine heavy weight paper.

You transfer the design, prick the holes in the heavy paper and stitch. This small book has designs for cards and for frames to hold photos etc.

You can then use any of your usual Needlepoint or Embroidery threads, Floss, Fibers, Yarns and add beads or anything.

This is a brand new book published by Search Press in the UK. I am not sure of the year. Easy Embroidery on Paper in a 9 X 6.5 inch glossy cover paperbound book with 48 pages.

ISBN 978-184448-195-8

<title>Doodle Stitching with CD by Aimee Ray</title>
<description>This book is subtitled "The Motif Collection" and says it has 400+ easy embroidery designs. I find that embroidery design book like this have many application in needlepoint. Not only for needlepoint done on linen but on canvas based as well.

A stitch is a stitch, more or less (more).

This is a fun book filled with smallish things to make. It includes a CD with the stitches and how to do them. I think the stitches are the point here, instead of the projects but that is just my take on this book.

All the pictures are in full color. for each stitch or sequence you are told what you need and the stitches used, very clear directions.

This is a brand new glossy paperbound book with the CD attached to the inside back cover.

Doodle Stitching is a First Edition published by Lark Books, a division of Sterling Publishing in 2010.

ISBN # 978-1-60059-581-3

<title>Royal School of Needlework Embroidery Techniques</title>
<description>I know this is not strictly a needlepoint book but I know I have learned some interesting techniques from this book that can be used and adapted to needlepoint.

This book has a group of authors. The text is by Sally Saunders. Designs by Anne Butcher &amp; Debra Barrett. The Royal School of Needlework was founded in 1872 by Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, Queen Victoria's third daughter.

The school was intended to preserve the art of hand embroidery in the face of the beginning machine age and to teach young woman a valuable trade.

The school's patrons soon included members of the William Morris/Arts and Crafts Design Movement. This book is intended to pass on the Royal School's methods for working a variety of stitches.

I have found this knowledge useful in working some of the decorative stitches that are being designed for needlepoint and the instruction on shading was (and is) essential to my needlepointing.

The book is full of pictures, most of them in full color. Almost everything discussed is illustrated, making the techniques easier to understand and follow. Who knows, you might even come to enjoy Embroidery as well as needlepoint.

This is a new book with a glossy heavy paper binding. The book was first published in 1198, this is the 2003 edition. Published by Batsford in the UK in association with the Anova Book Co Ltd. it has 160 pages.
ISBN # 978-0-7134-8817-3

	<title>Kyutto Japanese Woolly Embroidery</title>
<description>I did not know what this book would be when I ordered this book. I am very happy I did order it now that I see it.

The book shows Kyuuto stitched with wool on a more tightly woven cloth than mono canvas but not as tight a true linen. The graphs look like standard needlepoint graphs so you could take these designs almost anywhere, to cloth or canvas.

The subtitle of the books is "Crewelwork, Stump Work, Canvas Work, and More!"

The design are pretty. They are not at all Asian Influenced, more like traditional Needlepoint on Linen or Crewel Work.

This is a new book published by Chronicle Books in San Francisco in 2008. Kyuuto Japanese Woolly Embroidery was first published in Japan in 2006. It has 80 pages. ISBN #978-0-8118-6086-4

<title>All That Glitters by Alison Cole</title>
<description>This handsome new book takes you from beginning to stitch with Gold or Metallic threads all the way to completed projects. The techniques are somewhat different from stitching with cotton, linen, rayon etc. Unique to metallics alone.

The subtitle is: Projects featuring the techniques of Goldwork and Stumpwork. Although the book focuses on Goldwork etc, this information applies to stitching with Colored Metallics as well.

The book begins with a chapter on basic supplies &amp; requirements, There is a comprehensive 2 page full color layout showing you which thread is which, I think that would be very valuable. Sometimes the differences , while they matter, are hard to see in threads.

The book goes into stitching and the necessary techniques for this medium. Couching is discussed. There is a small section on special stitches and then 10 gorgeous projects.

It ends with a bibliography of additional reading on this subject, if you are so inclined (I have wanted to write that phrase for a long time).

Published by Search Press in England in 2008. This book was originally self-published by Alison Cole in Australia in 2006. It is a brand new glossy paperbound book with 136 pages. ISBN # 978-1-84448-313-6

	<title>A-Z of Thread Painting Book</title>
<description>Another fine book from the A-Z Series of needleworks books. It is edited by Sue Gardner.

I am not familiar with Thread Painting, I assume it is similar to "NeedlePainting" but I do not know that for a fact yet. According to the back cover blurb for this book "The art of painting with a needle is one of the most revered form of embroidery, but one that is within reach of every embroiderer." It goes on to call the book "An essential guide for Needleworkers everywhere" Then again, what else is the back cover going to say?

In looking through this book I see there is a section of basics on suitable threads &amp; fabrics. A section of stitches with a focus on the long &amp; short stitch and shading. Long &amp; Short stitch &amp; shading are subjects I know I need to work on. Perhaps you do too.

There are 12 projects in the Animals &amp; Birds chapter
14 in the Flowers &amp; Fruit chapter

There are 20 pages of patterns. These are line drawn designs to be transferred to fabric (or canvas).

These designs and techniques can be easily adapted to Needlepoint or used as discussed in this book. This does seem to be a comprehensive book. And yes, Thread Painting is very much like NeedlePainting. This is a very nice book.

A-Z of Thread Painting is a brand new book published by Inspiration Press in Australia in 2005. It is a glossy heavy paperbound book with a spiral binding hidden inside the cover of the book. It has 128 pages. ISBN #0-9750920-4-9

	<title>Needlecraft: Skills &amp; Techniques by Lucinda Ganderton</title>
<description>Lucinda Ganderton is the author of the classic stitch book Stitch Sampler. Stitch Sampler sold well here on NewNeedlepoint as a hard to find book and now it has been re-issued in a new edition (which I list here).

Needlecraft: Skills &amp; Techniques is part of the Practical Home Handbook series.

Quoting from the back cover;
"Over 500 instructional illustrations-both step by step to show you how and glorious inspirational galleries of the best current &amp; traditional Pieces

" Equipment, tools &amp; materials all fully described and explained-how to choose them and how to use them

"Learn how to master the traditional crafts with ease and how to adapt classic approaches and designs for modern equipment and contemporary projects"

"The primary teaching manual for all new needlecrafters and a standard reference work for advanced practitioners"

I think that last sentence says it all. This book is full of tips and techniques, in skimming through it I learned a few thgings I did not know.

THis would be an essentail book for beginners and useful to use veteren stitchers, as well. Packed with full color pictures and with Lucinda Ganderton's needlework knowledge

	<title>Mountmellick Embroidery by Pat Trot</title>
<description>I was not exactly sure what Mountmellic Embroidery was until I began selling these wonderful needlework books. I had heard the name but it sounded so exotic and difficult to me.

I was wrong, Mountmellick Embroidery is basically white on white embroidery using contrasting textures to create beautoful and natural designs.

Also from the back cover but an exact quote instead of my paraphrasing above " 13 different stitches are demonstrated through clear step-by-step photographs. Pat Trot shows how to use these to create simple motifs and stunning projects.

Beginners and experienced embroiderers alike will enjoy creating Dog Roses, Poppies, Ivy, Vines and many other designs inspired by the irish countryside."

This is a handsome book and the instructions are exactly as stated, clear and easy to follow. The book begins with everything you eed and the basics. At the end of the book are Templates for the designs.

I wish you could see the cover of this book clearly, the Mountmellick Embroidery on it is indeed stunning and that is not a word I use lightly.

Mountmellick Embroidery is a glossy cover paperbound book published in the UK by Search Press in 2002. it has 64 pages. There is a small picture of Pat trot on the inside front cover, she looks like she would be a lot of fun in a stitching roup.
