ColorWorks: The Crafters Guide to Color by Deb Menz

Now, I know this is not a needlepoint or a Bargello book but color is such an important part of how a stitched needlepoint project looks I thought I should include this book in my lists.

Color affects us and colors effect each others when used together. Whether you are designing your own needlepoint project, bargello needlepoint project or just doing some color switching to a painted canvas, the colors matter.

I do dislike the word "craft" used to describe needlepoint. I think of it and characterize it as an "Art" myself. I am actively overlooking this in the book, in the books subtitle and back cover blurb.

To quote the back cover "Stumped about which colors to use? ColorWorks gives you practical, hands-on tools fr using color in 9 crafts" (none f which is needlepoint but does include stamping, jeez).

There is however, useful advice here and a pull-out color wheel, 2 color value scores, perforated hue cards (these might be very useful for combining colors).

This is a brand new from the publisher hardboard (not hard cover and not paperbound, but cardboard bound) book with a hidden spiral spine. it was published by Interweave Press in 2004.

The Principles of Color by Faber Birren

The cover attracted me to this book. It shows the same graphic done on 4 colorways. This clearly illustrates the effect color can and does have on design.

The subtitle is : A Review of Past Tradition and Modern Theories.

To quote the back cover (always a good resource)
"This is an essential basic book on color, written by the best-known colorist of our times, for beginners seeking a through grounding in the comprehension and solution of color problems and for mature artists and teachers interested in keeping abreast of recent findings and conclusions".

"Beginning with an informative history of color circles, the author proceeds to a simple straightforward discussion of the traditional principals of color harmony".

He then goes on to the chapter The Harmony of Color about the natural pyschological paths of color arrangement (interesting).

The book includes advanced principles in color use. It has eight pages of full color pictures and numerous B & W illustrations.

Each color plate is discussed. The Principles of Color is a book for anyone really interested in Color Use and Theory (as I am)

A glossy cover paperbound book first published by Schiffer Publishing in 1969 with new material added in 1987. Obviously this is a popular book, it is still in print. It has 96 pages.

ISBN # 978-0-88740-103-9

Color Choices by Stephan Quiller

The subtitle on this book is "Making Color Sense Out Of Color Theory".It looks like an excellent book.

On the back cover is a painting of the author's , in this piece he demonstrates what can be done using the Triadic Color Scheme.

The book is bases on something the author calls the *Quiller Wheel*. It is his precise guide to planning Harmonious color relationships.

The book also has a large full color fold out of the Quiller Wheel.

This appears to be a fascinating book about how to best use color. This is a subject that fascinates me.

The chapters are:
What Is a Color Wheel
My Color Wheel Specifically
Locating Colors on the Outside of the Quiller Wheel
Locating Color on the Inside of the Quiller Wheel

The next few chapters are fro painters on color mixing etc. Then:

Monochromatic and Complimentary Color Schemes
Analogus and Split-Complementary Color Schemes
The Split-Complementart Color Scheme
Tradic Color Schemes
Going Beyond Structured Color

The next few chapters are, again, for painters then at the end of the book is a gallery of paintings by artists he considers *Master Colorists* There are 23 pages of them.

The last chapter is Historical Perspective on Color Theory

I am impressed. Needless to say, all the pictures are full color. Color Choices is a beautifully done large glossy paperbound book. First published in 1989 by Watson-Guptill Publications in New York.

The book has 144 pages and a full index.

ISBN # 0-8230-0697-2

Color on Color by Janet Haigh

*Elegant Designs to Stitch*. According to the author this is an Embroidery book but it does seem to be much more then that. This book has all kinds of Needlework as well as Embroidery. There is Bargello Needlepoint, Applique, Piecing, Pattern Darning (one I never heard of before), Beading & more.

Color on Color is from Anchor's Simply Stitched Series and it looks terrific.

The theme in this book is color. How it used, how it combines and the effects you can get. Many of the designs are sown drawn in different colorways. it is easy to see the difference color can make.

Color on Color ranges from the basics on Embroidery and choosing materials all the way to a design of all French Knots (hard to do).

There are 12 projects and a large section, at the end, called Useful Information. It has basic Embroidery Techniques,a Stitch Glossary, Assembly Instructions, Motifs, Patterns & Charts and Project Profiles.

I do not know if I should call this book a Color & Color Theory book or not. You decide.

A new Paperbound book, published by Coats Clark UK LTD (the company that makes Anchor threads etc) in 2004.

The book has 112 pages

ISBN # 1-931499-85-3

Colorful World by Amandine Guisez Galliienne

I do not see these books before I order them, wholesale, and have only the sketchiest of descriptions. Sometimes the book is spot-on and sometimes I am surprised (or dismayed).

This book on color belongs in the Surprised group. This is not a color theory book. It has no instructions on how to use color or correct color mistakes.

What is does have is 145 pages of absolutely gorgeous pictures of color. All color, how it is used, lived with and how it can attract or amaze you.

The book is divided into color groups and has very little text. Just page after page of full color pictures of the amazing ways color is used all over the world.

There are some interesting color use and combination ideas here but you have to find them for yourself, in the pictures.

The book's index has a small picture of the page's contents along with telling you what it is.

A beautiful book.

Colorful World was published by Thames & Hudson in London in 2005. It is a glossy cover paperbound book with 202 photographs and 145 pages.

ISBN # 978-0-500-28586-2

Color and Fiber by Patricia Lambert, Barbara S

This is a new book but the dust jacket is "the worse for wear", it also has a 1.5 inch rip on the back which I have taped up. I bought it planning to add it to my regular New Needlepoint Books category, I had one other color theory book listed there at that time but I never did get it listed before our last move.

It was a bad move, overall. The movers destroyed some treasured furniture and a number of other things. They also tossed the boxes around and piled them up with no attention paid to Fragile markings.

Anyway, the book is new but......

It's original cover price is $49.50. Because of the dust jacket damage I will sell it for $40. (with free shipping and it is a heavy book).

Below is a picture of the back of the book

Color and Fiber will teach textile artists (which includes stitchers) how to use and control color. The authors present schemes for solving color problems.

The book is divided into 3 sections. The 1st "presents essential terminology, ideas and definitions about light and color".

The 2nd "describes how light, dye and pigment work with fibers because different individual fibers, yarns and fabrics differ in their responses to light and color".

The 3rd section has practical applications for the information in the first 2 sections.

Patricia Lambert is an artist, photographer, author and teacher. She is the author of many articles on color and is a frequent lecturer on color theory and the uses of color.

Mary Fry is an accomplished Needlework Artist and Teacher.

Barbara Staepelaere is a free-lance Fiber Artist, Weaver, Designer & Teacher.

All and all, this is an important book for anyone who wants to get deeper into the uses of color.

Color and Fiber is a large, heacy hard bound book. Published by Schiffer Publishing in 1986. it has 254 pages.

ISBN #0-88740-065-5

Color & Human Response by Faber Birren

Faber Birren's other book, Principles of Color, has been a surprising success here on NewNeedlepoint.com. In that listing I describe it as a basic book on Color Theory and more.

This book was written later then Principles of Color. The sub-title for Color & Human Response is:" Aspects of Light and Color Bearing on the Reactions of Living Things and the Welfare of Human Beings". Well, that is quite a sub-title.

To quote the back cover of the book " Faber Birren pioneered in the field of functional color, using color properties to promote human welfare psychologically, visually and physiologically.

Color & Human Response offers intriguing factual and hypothetical observations on the influences of color in life, supported by historical reference and the latest scientific data.

Birren explores the biological, visual, emotional, aesthetic and psychic responses to color"

"Complete with drawings, color photographs and a chapter on the personal meaning of color preferences."

While I am unable to stop myself from wondering if maybe this book will teach you how the color used in your needlepoint pillows can improve your health and make you happier in life, I admit to being intrigued by & interested in this book.

The chapters are:
The Historical Background
Biological Response
Visual Response
Emotional Response
Aesthetic Response
Psychic Response
To Heal The Body
To Calm The Mind
Personal Color Preferences.

oddly enough, most of the pictures in this book are black & white, with one section of full color pictures. This appears to be an unusual book, to say the least.

I clearly had no idea how deep I was getting when I ordered it.

Published in both Canada & the USA in 1978 by John Wiley & Sons, this is a glossy cover paperbound book with 139 pages.
