TNNA's How to Knit

The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA) has this very good series of book (or booklets, more like) for absolute beginners.

This clear and easy to understand book will take you from materials needed to the very first steps, step-by-step to knitting a basic Knit Stitch, Garter Stitch, Purl Stitch, Stockinette Stitch and Ribbing Stitch.

The commonly used symbols in knitting are translated.

On the inside back cover of the booklet, the TNNA says "This book is intended to get you started in enjoying knitting, learning basic techniques and just a few of the hundreds of stitched available."

I think it is a great idea.

Published by The Needlecraft Resource Library in 2001, this is the Revised Edition-Volume 2.

Knits For Pets On The Go by Vogue Knitting

I love the cover of this book. I think I bought it for this cover. This book has also set me off on a *knits for pets book* craze. I have many more. I will be listing them in the next months.

I am not sure if the title is Vogue Knitting For Pets from the On The Go Series or Knits For Pets On The Go from Vogue Knitting or maybe Vogue Knitting's Knits for Pets On The Go.

Never mind, I am wandering again.

This is a wonderful little book. It begins with the basics of knitting and then goes into 21 projects for your pet. All the way from Dog Toys to Cat Mats, Dog Sweaters, Cat Collar, Dog Poncho (I am not kidding) a Tartan Cape for a dog, Felted Cat Nip Toys. You get the idea.

There are knitting graphs, directions including what you will need for each project. Each design has a full color photo of it all done, in many cases the pets are wearing them. There are even Dog Slippers (or Booties) to keeps their paws warm.

If I thought for a second Jack The Cat would put up with any of these clothes, I would knit them in a second. (no reason a cold cat can't wear a dog sweater).

This is a new book, published by Sixth & Spring Books in 2006. This is a glossy hardcover book. it does not have a dust jacket. It has 94 pages.

Charts Made Simple by JC Briar

This book has a subtitle:
Understanding Knitting Charts Visually.

There is a recommendation on the front cover as well, from Janet Szabo the author of Aran Sweater Design " You are holding in your hand The Only Book you will ever need to teach yourself how to knit from a chart" (the emphasis is hers)

According to the back cover "Charts Made Simple teachers knitters how to read charts- and better yet, how to make the most of them"

You will learn:
to see that a chart is a picture of the knitted fabric (interesting)
to make sense of the symbols in a chart without being tied to it's key (good idea)
to use charts as guides for minimizing and recovering from mistakes (we all make them)
to handle chart "quirks"- "no stitch symbols", repeated stitches. changes in stitch count and more with ease (ease sounds good, as does simple)

This looks like a valuable book. Charts Made Simple is full of diagrams and pictures. The text is clear and understandable.

It is also an interesting shape, with it's rounded outer corners. A paperbound book published by GLass Iris Publications in 2010, it is from the Knitting On Paper Series. The book has 104 pages.

ISBN # 978-0-9830792-0-0

Learn To Crochet by Sue Whiting

You probably know by now that I am a fan of "Learn To" or " Beginners" books. I clearly remember being a brand new stitcher and there seemed to be no where to find the basics of each kind of stitching. The stuff you need to know to plan or buy your first project.

So, I buy a lot of these kinds of books to list. Here is another.

The front cover says This is a Beginner's Guide featuring Step-By-Step, Key Techniques and 10 easy projects. Look pretty good from my know-nothing level, so far.

The back cover calls this book "A practical guide to crochet, with step-by-step instructions and photographs throughout."

" Original projects for the beginners, from baby clothes to stylish home accessories"

"Easy yo use with clear instructions, stitch diagrams and attractive color photography".

Let's see. This book is all it claims to be. All the photographs are full color and the diagrams are easy to understand. Each project begins with what you need to do it, directions and explanations for what the crochet symbols mean. The projects are not the height of fashion, us beginer's could not do them, if they were.

I could crochet using this book (and I am hopeless, I still prefer basketweave & tent stitch).

This is a new book From Creative Arts & Crafts, a division of Creative Homeowner Publisher, published in 2003. Learn To Crochet is a glossy paperbound book with 80 pages.

Amigurumi Animals by Annie Obaachan

subtitled: 15 patterns and dozend of techniques for creating cute crochet creatures.

Quoting the back cover: " Amigurumi is the Japanese art of making stuffed crochet animals" blah blah " These toys can be as simple or as complex as the maker likes-ranging from a tiny penguin to an elaborate textured elephant. The book provides all the information you need to get started, with tips on choosing yarns and needles and instructions on core techniques."

" All of the animals can be created using key shapes such as spheres, eggs, cylinders and flat circles which are quick and easy to stitch and put together"

"Includes clear step-by-step instructions".

In paging through this book, even a non-crocheter like me can see these designs are not difficult to make and the instructions are clear, if you understand knit & crochet language. There are tons of pictures, all in full color and the drawn diagrams are good size, not confusing.

These are very cute animals and your colors are only limited by the color that wool comes in. I don't know if you can crochet these from cotton thread as well, but I bet you can.

Published in the USA by St Martins Publishing in 2008. This is a glossy cover paperbound book with 128 pages.

Anticraft- Knitting, Beading & Stitching for the Slightly Sinister by Renee Rigdon & Zabet Stewart

An unusual book, to say the least.

The authors of this book are the founders of Anticraft.com. I have no idea what that is but the jacket blurb begins with "Creation from chaos is natural"

They call this book a place to "rest your eyes, find some inspiration" do something "small to confront the manufactured culture that is currently being churned out".

As out there as this sounds, I sort of agree with them (a little).

This book is best described using the Table Of Contents:
ANTIFESTO
ANTIDUCTION
KNITTING
snake dance thigh highs
gothic glam yule hat
belladonna sleeves
pop art skulls
tough baby
skylla

MISCELLANY

TECHNIQUES FOR VIRGINS (i assume by this they mean beginners)
master list of abbreveviations
knitting
crocvhet
beading
chainmail
EDUCATE THYSELF [RESOURCES]
INDEX

The directions seem to be good, although very tongue-in-cheek. The pictures are all black & white with color added to the projects they show.

Obviously, this book is aimed to Goth fashionistas or the little bit of Goth in many of us.

A fun book, and indeed unusual.

Published by North Light Books in 2007, Published in the US and also distrubted in Canada, UK, Australia.

This is a glossy cover paperbound book with 158 pages

Side note, there is nothing wrong with the back cover and the flaps, that is how they have been printed, I think it is supposed to be flak.

Crocheting School; A Complete Course

There does not seem to be an author's name here. Crocheting School was originally published in Itlay in 2001 as Scuola di Uncinetto.

It was published by Sterling Publishing in the USA in 2004 and translated for them by Mary Beth Benbenek.

To quote from the back cover (as usual):
"Start with a crochet hook, yarn and this complete crocheting course and end up with beautiful handiwork that you will treasure for years to come.

From the first chain to the finishing touches, you'll master all aspects of this pleasurable and practical craft"

Very well said. Crocheting School is the perfect book for any beginner. Anyone curious about crochet, this is clearly the place to start.

All the pictures are in full color and the directions are clear, not confusing even to a non-crocheter like me.

This is a glossy cover hard bound book, it does not come with a dust jacket. It is a brand new book but the cover is a bit rubbed, it must have sat on a distributor's shelves for awhile.

ISBN # 1-4027-0831-9

Fearless Knitting Workbook by Jennifer E. Seiffert

The subtitle for this book is:
"The Step-by-Step Guide to Knitting Confidence".

This is a metal spiral bound book inside a glossy hard cover. I always like books like this, they open to where you want them to and stay open, flat.

Quoted from the back cover: After some drivel about being afraid of knitting and making your knitting life easier, the back cover says this:

Fearless Knitting Workbook explores the principles behind knitting techniques while offering exercises to get your hands (and mind) comfortable with the unfamiliar. Work through more then 24 swatch projects that get you acquainted with concepts and methods."

Each Project features:
INSTRUCTIONS, row by row in knitting terms
TRANSLATION for new or unfamiliar abbreviations or symbols
WHY? explains why something is to be done as instructed
TIP pointers to make knitting easier
READ YOUR KNITTING understand the results of the instructiuons you just followed

This is clearly a beginners book and it does seem to be complete and easy to follow. I admit to being somewhat daunted, myself, by the many terms & symbols and abbreviations used in knitting charts. This book decodes them. A valuable book for a beginner or novice knitter.

Published by Interweave Press in 2009. This is, as I have noted, a metal spiral bound book in a hard cover with 158 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-59668-149-1

Alice Starmore's Book of Faire Isle Knitting

Alice Starmore is the author of several other needlework books including Celtic Needlepoint which I have listed here on NewNeedlepoint.com.

Faire Isle knitting is known for it's distinctive, stranded color patterns.

According to the back cover blurb, this book is suitable for a beginner or more advanced knitters.

The book begins with some of history of these colorful patterns, then goes on to cover the traditional techniques used to achieve these effects.

Ms. Starmore explains the traditional Faire Isle technique of circular knitting and gives detailed tutorials on incorporating classic motifs, exploring color schemes and creating unique patterns & designs (mostly quoted from the back cover).

The book has 14 of Alice Starmore's original designs to knit. They include cardigans, vests, fisherman's sweaters, hats. gloves & mittens.

The book has 250 photographs, drawings and easy to follow charts. (again, mostly quoted, this back cover is making my job easy).

In skimming through Alice Satrmore's Book of Faire Isle Knitting, I see that it is indeed full of pictures, there is a section in the center that shows page after page of Faire Isle Patterns in different colors and many pages of charts.

The directions seem complete to me (a not yet knitter). All in all, if you are interested in knitting Faire Isle designs, this seems to be the book to have but I do question the claim that a beginner could use this book. I doubt that.

This book was first published in 1988 by the Taunton Press. This is a slightly altered version of the book, first published by Dover in 2009.

The changes to the book are in the "Sources of Supply" section, which was outdated.

The book is a matte cover paperbound book with 199 pages.

ISBN # 978-0-486-47218-8

Knitting Over The Edge by Nicky Epstein

Subtitled: The Second Essential Collection of Over 350 Decorative Borders.

Unique Ribs, Cored, Appliques, Color, Noveau

The author's previous book was Knitting On the Edge, I have it listed here too.

The back cover states that over 65,000 copies of this book were sold in hardcover. I have no reason to dispute this.

To quote the inside cover flap "350 new and unusual edge combinations in the form of Ribs, Cords, Appliques, Colors and stylish new Edgings. Get ready to be thrilledby a delightful array of loop-de-loops, circles, balls. bobbles, stripes, animal inspired patterns, flowers & more.

In addition to the edgings, some of Nicky's most popular signature fashions are included-from a rose adorned caelet to a playful full-length coat complete with faux fur edging."

This book has 168 pages of edging ideas and directions, 2 to a page. They are all photographed in full color and most of them are terrific. I am not a knitter but the directions look clear.

There are edgings to suit almost anything, in any style. I would call this a comprehensive collection.

I will look for the first book in this series.

I think that sums up the books contents pretty well. This book is full of ideas, pictures and directions of interesting and some unique ways to edge and finish your knitting projects.

Knits Men Want by Bruce Weinstein

The sutitle of this amusing and useful book is
" The 10 Rules Every Woman Should Know Before Knitting For A Man"
"Plus The Only 10 Patterns She'll Ever Need"

And this appears to be true. The rules are are funny and very practical. The author, a man himself, does know his stuff. The patterns are basic, the advice is terrific and the directions are clear.

There is also some excellent advice here such as how to make a sweater feel less itchy (to it's fussy wearer) and which yarns are going to be less itchy and why.

There are lots of charts for sizing and all the pictures are in full color.

A unique book about a tricky subject, Knitting for Men.

This is a Mat cover paperbound book published in 2010 bt Stwear, Tabori & Chang and imprint of Abrams Publishing. It has 127 pages.

201 Knitting Motifs, Blocks, Projects & Ideas by Nicki Tench

The first thing I noticed about this book, and it is hard to miss, is that it is upside down inside it's cover.

The book has to be turned around to the back and upside down to be read in the correct order. This alone makes it a relatively rare book besides being mildly amusing.

Quoting from the back cover (as usual)
" 201 knitting motifs, blocks, projects and ideas at your fingertips"

"Contains 150 stunning knitted blocks, ranging from the simplest of basic stitches to more intricate advanced blocks"

"Features 51 specially designed projects showing how to use the blocks from blankets and throws to hats, scarves, gloves and other accessories"

"Includes hints, tips and basic techniques".

The above is all in quotes, I did not write it, I write better then that. It is somewhat lackluster a description of the books contents but let's get into it (turning the book upside down, I am already on the back cover).

There is a lot of content in here, many, many styles and ideas for blocks. There are the directions for blocks with each letter of the alphabet and each number knitted into them, that might be useful.

There are knitted blocks with embroidery added to them. There are tone on tone blocks, pattern blocks, picture blocks. There are many photographs and graphs/charts, all in color. There really is a lot of knitting ideas in here.

There is even a cute knitted purse with beading incorporated in the knitting, a block folded in half with a zip top.

201 Knitting is a large glossy cover paperbound book. Published by CICO Books in 2010, it has 176 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-907030-72-7

Easy Knitted Socks by Jeanette Trotman

The title of this books has some of my favorite words in it. "Easy " and "Socks". I love warm fluffy socks, I wear them 24 hours a day in the winter. The idea of hand knitted socks interests me.

The book's subtitle is "Fun & Fashionable Designs for the Novice Knitter". Some more of my favorite words "Fun, Fashionable and Novice".

Jeanette Trotman is a familiar name in knitting books, she is the author or several others. Quoting from the back cover of the book "Knitting socks has never been so easy, The ultimate in creature comfort, soft and snuggly hand-knit socks are on of life's little luxuries, and this user-friendly book features 20 simple and stunning designs, many of which can be made up in a weekend."

Each design has step-by-step photographs showing how

Learn the basic stitches and fail-safe construction methods using 2 regular needles or double pointed or circular needles

Tools, materials and core techniques are clearly explained plus advice on making "extra-special socks".

There are even baby booties in here.

Most of the above was paraphrased from the back cover. In looking through this book I agree. The pictures are all full color, the stitch photographs are very close-up and clear, even a non-knitter like me could see what they were doing.

I think for a beginning or novice knitter this is a wonderful book full of wonderful warm socks.

Easy Knitted Socks is a glossy cover paperbound book published by St Martin's Griffin Publishers in 2007. It has 128 pages.

The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns by Ann Budd

I know this is odd but I always like the word Handy in the title of an instruction book. I have no idea why.

The subtitle for this "handy" book is Basic Designs in Multiple Sizes & Gauges.

A (partial) quote from the back cover "More versatile and useful than standard pattern books, The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns features easy to follow charted instructions for the most popular knitted items-socks, mittens, gloves, hats, tams, scarves, sweaters & vests-all sized from baby or toddler to large adult, all written for multiple gauges to work with every weight of yarn, from fine to bulky, plus a detailed glossary of techniques for beginning to advanced knitters."

(that might be the longest run-on sentence ever, a new top in the number of commas).

Indeed, this book is both a pattern book and a knitter's reference book. In paging through the book, there are many lists and (I am not sure what to call them) references to use for sizing and gauge etc.

Each of the 8 patterns listed has many of these expanded lists (I still do not know what to call them, she calls them charts but they are not charts as I imagine charts)

Yes, this is and will be a Handy book.

The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns is spiral bound with a hard cover. There is a (handy) elastic book mark to keep your place and a sleeve on the inside back cover to store your notes.

Published by Interweave Press in 2002, it has 112 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-931499-04-0

The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques by Nancie M Wiseman

I was glad to find this title among the many Knitting Books out there, one of the most often sold books I have on NewNeedlepoint.com is Katharine Ireys wonderful Finishing and Mounting Your Needlepoint Pieces.

It seems to me that this book might also be one knitters would like to have.

This is an interesting quote from the back cover of this book:"Knitted one too many sweaters that scream *homemade*? Help is here. Finishing techniques are the key to turning out professional looking projects. This comprehensive reference gives you the know-how you need to get gorgeous, polished results every time".

Now, this is an area I know something about. My mother always knit and she gave me her projects to finish, which I did badly. In paging through this book I see many things I needed to know and did not.

The chapters are:
Cast Ons
Increases
Decreases
Selvages
BInd Offs
Seams
Picking Up Stitches
Borders, Bands & Finishes
Buttonholes
Odds & Ends.

The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques appears to "know it's stuff". I suspect most knitters could learn something here.

This is a spiral bound book inside a hard cover. Published by Martingale & Co in 2002, it has 144 pages.

ISBN # 9 781564 774521

The Knitters Companion by Vicki Square

This version of Vicki Square's well known book, The Knitter's Companion is the 2006 Expanded & Updated edition.

The back cover says that this edition has "all of the original best-loved and most-used techniques from the original version, as well as full-color drawings of the individual steps and photographs of the completed looks."

"Innovative methods have been added too, including more ways to cast on, bind off and increase stitches. You'll even find a new section on color knitting techniques, plus favorite details such as tassels, fringe, knitting with beads, and more".

(I take no responsibility for all those commas, I was quoting)

I know I do not knit and am really no judge, but the drawings of the techniques left me wondering. It is all here, certainly but I am not impressed.

(now I've done it, I will never sell this book. I bet the live action DVD is better)

If you are a fan of her first edition, this book will indeed please you.

This is a small size, but thick spiral bound book inside a hard cover published by Interweave Press in 2006. It has 138 pages and a handy Knitting Gauge as the last page. This book is the perfect size to slip into your tote bag.

200 Knitting Tips, Techniques & Trade Secrets by Betty Barnden

The back cover of this book calls it an "essential compendium of Knitting know-how." The 200 tips & techniques are explained and illustrated with clear step-by-step photographs and diagrams".

More from the backcover, Included are:
"How to read patterns & charts, choose colors and yarns & match stitch patterns and adapt design for the perfect fit

All stitches are clearly demonstrated, from stockinette stitch to ribbing to lace, Faire Isle, cables & intarsia work.

Explains all the techniques you'll need, in the order you will need them, from casting on and joining in yarns to shaping, adding button holes, pockets and embellishments"

In paging through the book I agree with the claims made on the back cover, plus all the pictures are in full color and there are many, many pictures.

There are sections on Creative Techniques and on Assembly and more. There really is a wealth of information in this book. I am, as you know, not a knitter yet, but as far as I can tell, this looks like a useful and comprehensive book.

There is even a list of what the common abbreviations mean.

A hardcover book published by St Martin's Press in 2008, it has 160 pages.

DVD: The Knitter's Companion DVD by Vicki Square

The Knitter's Companion DVD is a 2 disk set containing every single technique featured in Vicki Square's best selling book, The Knitter's Companion Deluxe Edition. Also included are several "bonus" techniques.

The DVD has:
The basics of knitting from reading yarn labels and taking body measurements to needle size conversions

How to adjust gauges and work with joins, seams, borders and buttonholes

An exploration of color knitting techniques, as well as embellishments such as tassels, fringe, knitting with beads, South American knitted join, knitted cord, French knot and more.

Since I can't watch the DVD and review it, really, we will have to make do with the description on the back. Vicki Square's book, The Knitter's Companion is a well known both, I think it is safe to assume this DVD is very good.

The DVD was produced by Interweave Press in 2011. Disk 1 runs for 2 hours 46 minutes, disk 2 runs for 2 hours 39 minutes

ISBN # 978-1-59668-317-4

Perfectly Plus Knitting by Mary Arnold, Colleen East & Kristen Hansen

I have a vested interest here, as a Rubenesque woman myself, I think a knitting book about sizing knits to us is a great idea. It often surprises me, 60% of American women wear a size 14 + but so much of the fashion you see everywhere is skewed to the small size women. Such a waste.

Plus I have another confession. This book is titled Perfectly Plus, I added the word Knitting to my title to better describe the book.

The subtitle for this book is "Featuring the Knit-to-Fit Workbook for the Full-Figured Woman.

From the back cover of the book:
How to guide for fit and construction techniques for plus size garments

Forget about boxy, baggy sweaters-finally plus-size patterns with some sizzle

Feel confident creating garments that are Knit-to-Fit in all the right places.

The designs here are very good, these are things I would wear (and I have excellent taste) plus they are shown on an actual plus-size model, not a drawing or a skinny minnie model. There are very complete knitting and sizing directions.

Perfectly Plus chapters include:
The Fitting Process
Make-it-Fit Basic Shell
Make-it-Fit Basic Cardigan

Plus 7 other projects. Then the final chapters are:
General Information
Knitting Basics
Meet the Designers
Resources
Photo Index.

Since I have already been "personal" here I will add this, my mother always knit (until her hands could not anymore) and she often made me sweaters. They always fit so badly, I wish she had had this book, back then.

Published in 2010 by House of White Birches, this is a paperbound book with 64 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-59217-317-4

101 Designer One-Skein Wonders edited by Judith Durant

Another book with a number in it's title, I seem to have developed a weakness for these.

The subtitle is "A World of Possibilities inspired by just one skein".

This book has an interesting table of contents. Instead of the usual list with page numbers, One Skein Wonders show you each project or design, in a full color photo and all finished with a page number on the picture.

This is the 2nd book I have encountered with this unusual table of contents and I have to say, it is great.

The book is physically beautiful, the colors used for the pages and the page designs and end papers are very nice.

The projects are what you would imagine with some surprises. ! skein is a limitation but some of these ideas are fine.

Beautiful lace knit vests, scarves & shawls. Table runners, gloves and many kinds of hats. Socks, baby clothes, a checkbook cover, a belt and a "loop through" scarf. ruffled and unique scarves, a mini messenger bag, bath rug, notebook cover and more and more.

The directions seem complete. The only drawback I can see is that the color picture of each project is only shown in the front of the book, in the table of contents. There is no picture on the pages about each project.

101 Designers One Skein Wonders ins a glossy cover paperbound book. Edited by Judith Durant and Gwen Steege. Published by Storey Publishing on 2007, it has 254 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-58017-688-0

400 Knitting Stitches by Potter Craft Publishing

The subtitle for this book is: A Complete Dictionary of Essential Stitch Patterns. I think that almost says it all.

Quoting from the back cover "Filled with detailed step-by-step instructions, charts and photographs, 400 Knitting Stitches covers nearly any fiber style you are looking to create. From the most basic knit-purl stitches to the fanciest of them, you'll find stitch combinations for every skill level and every taste.

Among the 8 categories of stitches covered (including crossed stitches, cables, slipped stitches, lacy stitches, double stitches, twisted stitches and cast off stitches) you'll find fabulous stitches such as
Diamond Brocade
Wreaths
Half Hearts
Seeds
Giant Honeycomb
Rows of Petals
Butterflies
Tulle
Lacy Vertical Zig Zags
Ladders
Bobble
Acorns
And Hundreds more"

Yes, it was all on the back cover.

In paging through the book it does indeed have all those stitches and many more. The instructions seemed clear, to me anyway (I do not knit very well).

The only thing worth mentioning is that all the pictures of the 400 stitches are done in a creamy off-white wool and shown on a rose color background, for contrast.

It works well.

400 Knitting Stitches is a glossy cover paperbound book. It was published by Potter Craft which is a division of Crown Publishing in 2007. The book was originally published in France in 2005.

150 Knit & Crochet Motifs by Heather Lodinsky

The subtitle of this book is:
Anything But Square Shapes For Garments, Accessories, Afghans and Throws.

I opened this book and was immediately surprised. The table of contents is like no other I have ever seen.

The book is organized by pattern shapes, this first part is called The Directory. There are the Circles Patterns. In the Directory each circle pattern is shown in a full color photograph with it's page number below it.

The Diamonds section is the same, so is the Squares section, the Triangles section, the Octagons, the Pentagons, the Stars, The Flowers, the Hearts, the Shells, the Leaves and the Connectors.

The last sections are:
Projects & Techniques
Reading Patterns & Charts

I am impressed (and that is not so easy to do). This is a completely sensible, no guess-work way to display the books contents.

Every photo, drawing or chart in this book is in color. The line drawings are sometimes just a color or 2 but the others are full color.

I am not a knitter (yet) but from what I can see, this all looks "right" and the book seems knowledgable.

150 Knit & Crochet Motifs is a new, glossy cover paper bound book. Published in 2011 by Interweave Press it has 144 pages

A to Z of Knitting: The Ultimate Guide

Another in the very useful and well done book in the series of A to Z needlework books. The subtitle is "For Beginner to Advanced Knitter".

I have to admit, it was the picture on the cover which first attracted me, although the A to Z books reputation did not hurt.` The cover picture is shiny and soft off-white balls of yarn mixed with some fluffy un-spun wool and pale peach and green/white roses. I am a sucker for this stuff.

This is a quote from the books's back cover " Knitters, here's a resource you'll refer to again and again. With clear instructions and truly helpful photos, this book walks you from beginner's basics through Aran, Faire Isle, entrelac and intarsia knitting. It's everything you wanted to know about knitting-simplified".

in paging through the book I am impressed. Although I do not really know how to knit, I can recognize a book with clear instructions and a wealth of full-color pictures illustrating everything.

Each pages (as far as I can tell) has no less then 4 pictures and most have 5 or 6.

A to Z of Knitting is a glossy cover paperbound book. The copyright is County Bumpkin Publication in 2006. The original hardcover version of this book was published by Martingale Co in 2007. It has 152 pages.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Knitting by Becca Smith

I should keep this book for myself. My mother always knit and tried many times to teach me how but I never got it.

This book is humorously done and absolutely for a beginner knitter.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Knitting begins with thebasics, in the first chapter. Chapter 2 is called KNIT

Chapter 3 is called PURL.

The the book goes on to show how to make stitch patterns. The stitches are grouped by Easy Stitches, Intermediate Stitches and Advanced Stitches.

Then there is Increasing & Decreasing, Knitting in the Round, Changing Color.

The the book goes on the Intermediate Techniques such as Simple Shaping. More Shaping Techniques, Sock Construction, Using Big Needles and Bulky Yarn, Knitting with Multiple Yarns, Adapting Sizes, The Anatomy of a Jacket.

Then there is an Advanced Section with INtarsia, Entrelac, Felting Your Knitting.

The next section is Your Knitting Kit and the last section is Correcting Common Problems.

Just from scanning this index and the pages, this seems to be a very comprehensive book.

This is a glossy cover paperbound book. Published by Alpha Publishing which is a division of The Penguin Group in 2010 the book has 283 pages.

ISBN # 978-1-61564-051-5

Color by Kristen by Kristen Nicholas

Subtitled How to Design Your Own Beautiful Knits.

When I bought this book I thought it was a color & color theory book. It is not, it is a beautiful knitting design and pattern book.

The focus of this book is knitting using multiple colors.

The designer explains the theory behind using colors to maximum effect. There are some incredible knitting projects in here, using amazing colors.

The book has 22 charted projects with complete (really complete) directions for each one. In the case of the Marrakesh Market Pillows you get directions for 4 different pillows.

There is a chapter on the Joy of Color. A chapter on making Faire Isle Knitting Easy and a chapter on designing Faire Isle Knits. There is a section called "the Designer Sourcebook" with custom edgings and a colorwork Chart Glossary and a section called Abbreviations & Techniques.

The color use is excellent. I am impressed with this book (I can't knit but I might try to learn).

Color by Kristin is a new hardcover book. Published by Sixth & Spring Books in 2009. The book has 172 pages.

ISBN # 1-933027-83-5

Needlecraft: Skills & Techniques by Lucinda Ganderton

Lucinda Ganderton is the author of the classic stitch book Stitch Sampler. Stitch Sampler sold well here on NewNeedlepoint as a hard to find book and now it has been re-issued in a new edition (which I list here).

Needlecraft: Skills & Techniques is part of the Practical Home Handbook series.

Quoting from the back cover;
"Over 500 instructional illustrations-both step by step to show you how and glorious inspirational galleries of the best current & traditional Pieces

" Equipment, tools & materials all fully described and explained-how to choose them and how to use them

"Learn how to master the traditional crafts with ease and how to adapt classic approaches and designs for modern equipment and contemporary projects"

"The primary teaching manual for all new needlecrafters and a standard reference work for advanced practitioners"

I think that last sentence says it all. This book is full of tips and techniques, in skimming through it I learned a few thgings I did not know.

THis would be an essentail book for beginners and useful to use veteren stitchers, as well. Packed with full color pictures and with Lucinda Ganderton's needlework knowledge

ISBN # 978-0-7548-0810-7
