Blackwork is (or can be) any 2 color stitching design (except for Whitework which is slightly different). There are books on Redwork and I suppose there could be Purplework or Greenwork and on.

I am finding these needlepoint and embroidery design books in French to be excellent. The designs are original and well done and I don't find the lack of the English language to be much of a barrier.
While many of them have measurements in both inches and metric, this one's measureing is in metric. That is easy enough to translate with any search engine, if you are not familar with them.

This is an amazing book, Yes, it is embroidery, yes it is in French but still, just wonderful. The language is not much of a barrier here, the designs & graphs do not need translation.
Most of the designs are easily used for needlepoint or cross-stitch, or surface embroidery over needlepoint.

I had not seen any books by Christen Brown before but I will be on the look-out for them now. This is a very well done book about creating flowers from ribbon, using ribbon work techniques.

This is another of the new books where I have kept one for myself. My shading skills are non-existant to negative (as in I do worse than you could imagine).
Although this book's title says it is about "Silk Shading" the techniques here are suitable and highly adaptable to Cotton Embroidery, Crewel Work or Needlepoint. Silk shading is also called Thread Painting.
Silk Shading is aimed at beginners but I do not think it is right for "real"beginners. I suggest this book for mid-level to advanced...
Jan Messant is a very well-known and popular writer of needlwork books. I list several of here other books here included her current book, Embroidered Potraits and several of her out-of-print books.

Stitch Variations and Mutations in a completely revised and updated 2013 version.
This is a loose leaf book. I wanted to punch holes and put it in a 3 ring binder but Ann Strite-Kurz did not think that was a good idea. My solution is to put the pages in a pressure binding notebook. This was they can be used one page at a time or as a notebook.
