This is a large, coffee table size book. This is a quote from the cover of the book, something of a sub-title "102 designs derived from art of the past from Ancient Egypt and Classical Greece to the Renaissance, the American Folk Tradition and Art Nouveau"
As you can see, the picture used for the dust jacket is very much American Folk Art. I thought that this book was about American Historical Art used for Needlepoint. I was very surprised when I actually received the book.
The dust jacket is in pretty bad condition. This has become something of a joke for me, each one of these books I buy to sell (this is the 4th) has this just awful, tattered and ripped up dust jacket with a good to very good book inside. This one is no exception. I have scotch taped the dickens out of the dust jacket to try and stop further damage.
There is one section of color pictures and many of the B and W graphs have highlights in red.
The chapters all begin with:
DESIGNS FROM THE ART OF THE:
MINOANS
ANCIENT EGYPT
ANCIENT NEAR EAST
GREECE AND ROME
BYZANTINE EMPIRE
THE MIDDLE AGES
ISLAM
THE RENAISSANCE
17TH-19TH CENTURY EUROPE
AMERICAN FOLK ART
Each chapter has several designs and graphs as well as history and background for the place and era.
A Needlepoint Gallery of Patterns from the Past is a hardcover book, it was published in 1975 by Alfred A. Knopf. It really does seem to be a well researched and interesting book. All of the designs (as far as I can tell) are shown as completed needlepoint canvases, in B and W and in full color in that section.
This has been a very popular book at NewNeecdlepoint.
