Maggie Lane is a very well known name in Needlepoint. As I list these books for sale I see her name over and over again, In thank you's, acknowledgments, and for creating graphs. Needlepoint BY Design has 24 Variations on Chinese Design adapted for Needlepoint.
This is another classic NP book that is becoming hard to find
The graphs and directions in this book and very detailed and clear.
I think a slightly advanced beginner could understand and use these directions. They would be excellent for a more advanced stitcher as well.
The book is mostly done in black and white with 2 sections of full colors pictures, each design is represented in a color picture.
The chapters give you a complete picture of the book. Introduction, materials, stitches, starting to work, working and finishing plus notes on color.
Maggie Lane was born in China to Missionary parents. They returned to the USA just before Pearl Harbor. She has brought her love of Chinese desing to this book, the designs really are good and not run-of-the mill.
Here's an interesting bit of biographical info, Mrs Lane is (or was) married to a New York State Supreme Court Judge.
It was published in 1979 by Charles Scribner's Sons in New York
Needlepoint by Design is in good condition. There is not dust jacket. The edges of the hard covers are worn & rubbed a little, mostly at the spine ends.
The pages inside are very good, yellowed but otherwise perfect. The spine is very tight.
