This wonderful book is from The Royal School of Needlework's Essential Stitch Guides Series. This is nicely done book with everything you need to know about Blackwork included. It is what you would expect from a book sanctioned by The Royal School of Needlework.

After the introduction there is a History of Blackwork, then a section on material, framing and design. There are 10 pages of stitches and each is shown in great detail, with line drawings, full color photographs of the stitch in progress (even if the only color in the picture is the fingers making the stitch) and a photo of the stitch in "use" (in a design).

There are also some things to be learned here besides blackwork. The Sketched Satin Stitch on page 32 plus the chapter on shading would be useful many stitchers.

Then there are 44 pages of patterns and a chapter on Shading and combining the techniques.

I like Blackwork, I like the crisp contrast, the whole idea of it but even so, I think this is a very well done and useful book.

The back of the book has a few pages of amazing finished original design Blackbook stitched canvases. Wonderful!
