Moyra McNeill is also the co-author, with Elizabeth Geddes, of Blackwork Embroidery. Although the book is titled "Embroidery" all the pictures and examples, including the one on the cover, show Needlepoint Canvas being used.
Quoting from the back cover:
"Pulled Thread embroidery transforms a piece of ordinary fabric into delicate *lace* by compressing threads of loosely woven background material with tightly pulled stitches."
I would add to that, it is also a way to add depth and texture to a stitched peice.
Quoting some more:
"Easy-to-follow instructions are provided for creating dozens of decorative stitches, among them the diagonal cross, open trellis, checker fillings, the ripple, Finnish, cushion, diamond, and triangle as well as composite stitches."
In reading this I am thinking they would also make spectacular backgrounds.
In paging through the book, I agree. The instructions are easy to understand and there are many (many) photographs and stitch charts.
Originally Published in the UK in 1971, this is 1993 Dover re-print Edition. A new, glossy cover paperbound book with 207 pages.
