Blackwork is (or can be) any 2 color stitching design (except for Whitework which is slightly different). There are books on Redwork and I suppose there could be Purplework or Greenwork and on.
Quoting and paraphrasing a lbit from the back cover:
"Blackwork Embroidery was very popular in Tudor times, and it is now enjoying a tremendous revival. A form of counted-thread work, Blackwork emphasizes shading contrast that are possible woeking with a single color thread."
"After covering the intriguing history of Blackwork in a lively text & beautiful selection iof illustrations, the authors present every aspect of modern techniques and uses."
Blackwork Embroidery is an unabridged republication of the original 1965 edition.
In paging through this book, I found the history and pictures of early Blackwork to be interesting. This book does indeed explain and instruct you on how to stitch Blackwork, it will take a beginner from the beginning (sorry, couldn't resist) and there is much for even an experienced stitcher to learn here.
The text, the motifs & the designs do not seem dated at all. The book has 320 illustration, that is alot in a 115 page book.
I suppose I am somewhat prejudiced, I always think highly of the Dover Press series of Needlework Books.
Published by Dover Press in 1976. This is a new glossy cover paperbound book.
